CHESHAM United are still riding the crest of a wave after thrashing Tiverton 5-0 in front of 340 fans at The Meadow on Saturday.

It was their biggest league win in two years and keeps Andy Leese’s side just one place and one point off the top of the Southern League Premier Division.

It’s a dream start for the Generals, promoted out of Division One South & West last season, and if they can get a result at Windsor & Eton tomorrow night they will go into Saturday’s FA Cup tie bursting with confidence.

So far this season their success has been founded on defence. Saturday was their fifth clean sheet in seven games but it didn’t come at the expense of attacking threat.

Three goals in 15 first-half minutes won the match before a couple of late goals turned a comprehensive victory into a drubbing.

Captain Danny Talbot stroked home the first goal with a 29th minute penalty, and after 36 minutes it was 2-0 when Gabrial Fanbuyan tapped in after a superb run from Steve Wales.

The points were in the bag when Chris Bangura’s deflected drive made it 3-0 just before the interval and after controlling the second period with long spells of possession football, the hosts added the pomp and ceremony with goals four and five through Dave Fotheringham and Wales.

Meanwhile, in Division One Central Marlow had defenders Sam Willment and Gavin Lane to thank for a 2-1 home victory over Ashford Town, but Beaconsfield continue to struggle near the foot of the table after going down 2-1 to Atherstone.

Both sides are in action again tonight, with Beaconsfield at Rugby and Marlow making the short trip to Slough.
