Marlow rower Katherine Grainger finally wins Olympic Gold
KATHERINE Grainger has ended her quest for Olympic Gold with a fairytale win in the final of the women’s double scules at Dorney Lake today.
The Marlow rower was a silver medallist at Sydney, Athens and Beijing and had contemplated retiring rather than putting herself through the Olympic cycle one last time.
But, after so many heart-breaking near misses, the most celebrated British female rower in history has finally added that elusive precious gold to her collection at London 2012.
Grainger and partner Anna Watkins kept calm to beat the Australian pair into second before she looked up to the heavens after crossing the finish line to say ‘oh my God’.
The 36-year-old told the BBC: “I feel this medal is the people’s medal, I feel so many people have been behind me and wanted it for me.
“Everyone has been part of it and it makes it feel that much more special.”
The Prime Minister David Cameron has tweeted his congratulations to Grainger and Watkins, after their success moved Team GB into fourth in the medal table.
