Wycombe on the brink of title glory
HIGH Wycombe are on the verge of wrapping up the Home Counties Premier League title again after another comfortable win.
Matthew Eyles' 148 and a century from youngster Alex Morgan allowed the reigning league champions to chalk up 337-3 from just 54 overs as their superb run with the bat continued.
Opponents Bishops Stortford had no answer as only David Hughes, who hit 117, showed any resistance. They were all out for 230 as Wycombe cruised to a 107 run victory that leaves them needing just one more win from their three remaining matches to clinch the title.
They could wrap things up in Bucks as they travel to Burnham on Saturday.
Elsewhere, Gerrards Cross remain in trouble as they were beaten again despite a dogged middle order recovery.
Opponents Falkland reduced them to 84-5 before a 66 run stand between Vikram Banerjee and Steve Rimmer laid foundations for a defendable total.
Rimmer's dismissal brought James Webster to the crease and he proceeded to smash an unbeaten 52 from just 30 balls, hitting four fours and three sixes as Cross closed on 221-5.
A strong start for Falkland appeared to put them in the driving seat until three quick wickets from Rimmer, followed by a stumping off the bowling of Banerjee, put things in the balance again.
A draw appeared the most likely outcome until Hamza Riazuddin cut loose, helping his side hammer 25 runs off the last three overs as Falkland claimed a five wicket win.
In the Thames Valley League Beaconsfield were skittled for 118 as they were beaten at home by Basingstoke, and Amersham also posted a low total as they were dimissed for just 113, but Marlow finally picked up their first win of the season as they beat High Wycombe 2s by seven runs.
