Bowled over by their Sky Sports nominations

TWO South Bucks cricket coaches have been nominated for the Sky Sports ECB Young Coach of the Year.

Luke Wright, from High Wycombe and Matthew Watson from Chesham are both in the running for the award in recognition of their ‘outstanding services to grassroots cricket.’

To mark their nominations, they attended a day at the National Cricket Performance Centre, which included skills masterclass sessions with former England international and current national spin coach, Peter Such, Leicestershire batting coach, Ben Smith and Durham fast bowling coach, Neil Killeen.

Luke has been coaching since 2009 and is already a qualified UKCC2 coach at Great Kingshill CC.

He has taken part in the Chance to Shine programme with local schools and ran an after school club at Little Kingshill Combined School and Prestwood Junior School and has had a part time role with the ESM Cricket Academy in High Wycombe.

He said: “I am delighted to be recognised by Sky Sports and the ECB and to be nominated for the Young Coach of the Year award.”

Watson, meanwhile, coaches three nights per week as well as delivering coaching to two local schools, reaching around 70 children per week.

He said: “I love coaching and having the opportunity to attend a masterclass session with three great coaches will really help me develop my skills further.

“I can now go back to Bucks and pass on a number of useful drills for all areas of the game. ”

The duo are among 33 coaches, all under the age of 25 in the running. The winner will be announced in the New Year.
