Saints triumph in u-16s final

A STURDY defensive performance allied to a vibrant attack led Chalfont Saints to victory in the Bucks free press under 16s league cup final.

The Saints, skippered by Harry Dempsey, put in a convincing display to see off rivals Aylesbury Town 3-0.

Striker Stan Cooke put his side on the way to victory with a strong finish after 30 minutes. Chalfont looked dangerous early in the match with a number of forages down the right wing and some good dribbling skills by Aaron Benmore.

However, Aylesbury came back into it with a series of set pieces which led to a good chance in the box - a header was cleared off the line. Chalfont regained the initiative and continued to attack effectively down the right wing with Tom Green showing some good touches.

The game remained fairly open with attacks at either end although the Aylesbury defence looked vulnerable from balls over the top.

After Cooke bagged the first goal of the game Aylesbury almost hit back straight away with some clever build-up play but could not find the finish they required.

Aylesbury started the second half with intent pushing forward strongly and getting the ball into the box on a few occasions.

However they were dealt a serious blow when Chalfont Striker Steve Park squeezed his shot past the keeper after a great run down the left hand side to make it 2-0.

Despite a determined effort from the Aylesbury players to get back into the match they never really threatened and lacked the final touch. Vice captain Louis Quane in central defence was outstanding for Chalfont, looking assured whenever he was called upon and comfortable in possession.

The killer blow was dealt when Tom Green wrestled his way through the Aylesbury defence to finish coolly in the far corner despite pressure from a defender.

At 3-0 down there was no back way back for Aylesbury. Manager Keith Newton was delighted with his team after lifting the trophy.

He said: "I'm absolutely delighted. IIt was a tough game. Last year they beat us in the final but in the end I think we played the better football today." The Saints are now concentrating on the league with a chance to do the double still on.
