Minors stung by underdogs

A CLASSIC cup upset was played out at Marlow FC on Sunday as Flackwell Heath Scorpions triumphed over the favourites Flackwell Heath Minors to win the under 14s league cup final.

A highly competitive and hard fought contest ended 2-0 to the Scorpions.

The minors, 18 points clear of their opponents in the league, dominated the opening exchanges.

The Reds, captained by Zach Martin, were in control of the match the first half hour and looked certain to score.

However, a resolute and determined rearguard action from the Scorpions kept them at bay. After one way traffic, the crowd was surprised by a swift and incisive break away down the left wing as Scorpions attacker Aquila Burgess notched the first goal of the game.

After an excellent run he rolled the ball across the keeper into the bottom of the net.

The goal proved a decisive moment in the match, giving the battling underdogs belief that they could hold out for victory.

In the second half, the early dominance shown by the Reds dwindled and they were never able to get into their stride.

The Whites, skippered by Kurt Devonshire, were extremely effective in shutting down their opposition, playing an energetic pressing game. On top of their determined efforts to keep a clean sheet they had a sting in the tail - attacker Matt Ball steering in a crucial second goal to seal with a remarkable triumph.

Ecstatic manager, Steve Coleman, sprayed his jubilant team with champagne as they celebrated their unlikely win.

He said: "They were always expected to win but the boys played their hearts out to be honest.

"We told them to get stuck in to them and we know all of their players really well.

"It was a really outstanding effort."

Son and vice captain Tom Coleman from John Hampton Grammar School said: "It's nice to get our own back."
