Kyle Edmund kept the British flag flying at the Australian Open in searing heat with a gutsy five-set victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili on Friday.

Home hope Nick Kyrgios defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to reach the fourth round for the second time in Melbourne while Rafael Nadal is yet to drop a set after crushing Damir Dzumhur.

In the women’s draw there were comfortable wins for Caroline Wozniacki and Elina Svitolina, who ended the run of 15-year-old Marta Kostyuk, but French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko was beaten by Anett Kontaveit.

He may be nearly 39 but Ivo Karlovic is still breaking serving records. The 6ft 11in Croatian has become the first player ever to serve more than 50 aces in successive matches. After hitting 53 in his second-round win over Yuichi Sugita he struck 52 against Andreas Seppi but, unfortunately for Karlovic, it was the Italian who progressed to round four.

That’s a shank

It was not just the heat making life difficult for players, there was also a swirling wind. Kyle Edmund and Nikoloz Basilashvili both mis-hit a number of shots, none more spectacular than this serve from the Georgian that almost cleared the stands.

Fallen seeds

Men: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (15), Gilles Muller (23), Damir Dzumhur (28), Andrey Rublev (30).
Women: Jelena Ostapenko (7), Kiki Bertens (30).
