England require 257 to win their one-day international series against India after Yorkshire pair David Willey and Adil Rashid took three wickets apiece at Headingley.

India have won their previous nine bilateral ODI series, but Eoin Morgan’s men will fancy their chances of ending that streak after the tourists were put in and restricted to 256 for eight in the third and final game in Leeds.

Rashid, on his home ground, was vital and the key wicket he claimed was that of India captain Virat Kohli, who reacted in utter disbelief to a tremendous delivery that ripped into his off stump after pitching in line with leg.

Removing Kohli for 71 was a pivotal moment, as was Shikhar Dhawan’s departure on 44 earlier in the innings when Ben Stokes’ brilliant direct hit at the non-striker’s end removed the Indian opener.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s 42 was accumulated from 66 balls and Willey found his edge with four overs still to spare, so it was left to number nine Shardul Thakur to provide the late fireworks with the innings’ only two maximums that gave England a trickier target to chase.

The turn Rashid found to remove Kohli would also have been noted by India’s own chief spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

England have struggled to pick Kuldeep’s left-arm wrist spin in this series and he claimed nine wickets in the opening two games so India’s hopes of victory may hinge on him.

The hosts will begin their reply without regular opener Jason Roy too after he was ruled out with a finger injury sustained while fielding during Saturday’s game at Lord’s.

In his absence, Hampshire’s James Vince earned a recall having not played for the ODI team since October 2016.
