WASPS will shuffle their backs around tomorrow in a bid to find a formula that offers greater penetration.

Without wingers Christian Wade and Tom Varndell, as well as the now retired full back Hugo Southwell, the black and golds have looked one-dimensional behind the pack with little spark or invention.

Centres Andrea Masi and Chris Bell are both of the same ilk, hard-hitting defensive centres, while a host of players have been tried on the wings with varying degrees of success.

Director of rugby Dai Young said: “We’re looking to shake it up a little bit. We’ve got to try something a little bit different.

“Defensively we’ve looked very strong but you wouldn’t have to be a rugby guru to see that we haven’t been as effective as we’d like with the ball.

“If you keep on doing the same thing you get the same result, won’t you? So we’re trying to shake it up a little bit to see if we can get something different.”

That means returning Elliot Daly to centre, with Masi dropping to full back, while Jonah Holmes has been recalled from Leeds to start on the wing.

Young said: “Wings are a problem for us going into this game. Josh Bassett came off with a hamstring so he’s out for two or three weeks and we’ve already got Tom Varndell and Christian Wade out.

“We’re down the bare bones on wingers.

“Jonah has been having an excellent season at Leeds playing at both wing and full back so we’re quite excited to have him back.”
