SUNDAY’s record defeat to Northampton Saints will cost some players their Wasps futures.

The ghastly 74-13 loss has left an indelible print on the mind of Dai Young, who has warned that the fall-out will be far reaching.

While he admits there were extenuating circumstances, he views them as explanations rather than excuses and confirmed the club’s heaviest ever Premiership defeat will be terminal for some of his players.

He said: “Yes, that’s the reality. We have to look at moving this club forward. I’d like to take this squad with me but if a few fall by the wayside then so be it.

“You have to make big decisions as you go along.”

Young admitted after the match that he was embarrassed by the performance and his stance hadn’t softened four days later.

He said: “I still feel hurt by it and let down. I think the players let themselves down, they let me down and everything the club stands for.

“That’s not because we lost or because we lost by that margin of points, but because of the way we rolled over and lacked fight, especially in that last 20-25 minutes.

“I certainly won’t forget it in a hurry. I’m not going to brush it under the carpet and pretend like it didn’t happen. It happened and we have to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“I’ve said exactly that to the players and I believe there will be a fall out from it. You have to react to situations like that.

“Fortunately or unfortunately the next two weeks are not the time to do it. But if you are progressing you have to be in a position where you can rest players.

“Sarries do it regularly, Leicester do it regularly and they don’t lose by 70 points.”

Six of last Saturday’s squad have already been told their fate. They were on the list of players announced by the club this week who will be leaving at the end of this season, although Young insists that culling all the fringe players isn’t the solution.

He said: “There was a number of reasons. It wasn’t all down to effort. Some players hadn’t played for a long time and were a bit rusty so we have to put all the pieces into the jigsaw and make sure we come up with the right answers.

“We have to look at numerous ways of making sure that doesn’t happen again, it’s not all about just clearing everybody out.

“We have to do things a little differently with some of the fringe players. If there are players that aren’t good enough then we have to make choices, but it’s not a case that all the players aren’t good enough.
