TOM Varndell says a run out at the Rio Olympics would be a fine way to sign off his career in 2016.

The Wasps winger isn’t following former team-mate Charlie Hayter into the England Sevens squad just yet but, at 28, he has his sights set on a grand send off.

He said: “I had a great experience while I was in the England 7s and I've had a great experience playing 7s for my club – both Leicester Tigers and Wasps.

“It's a great game to play and a very exciting time with it now being an Olympic sport.

The Olympics is definitely on my radar – it would be a great way to round off my career.”

Hayter joined the England Sevens squad this summer and could feature at the Commonwealth Games later this month.

Varndell played at the Games in 2006 and has also been a regular in the Premiership Rugby 7s.

He said: “It's in the back of my mind but it's there. The Olympics would be unbelievable – I did the Commonwealth Games over in Melbourne and that was a fantastic experience but the Olympics is one step better than that.

"I love to be an Olympian and I'd love to win a medal over there in Brazil, especially for Great Britain – that would be fantastic."

Varndell could play for Wasps in the Premiership 7s Series on August 1.

Wasps have been drawn with Northampton, Saracens and Harlequins for the Franklin’s Gardens group matches.

Focus in the short-term remains on the Premiership Rugby 7s Series with Wasps facing a fiercely competitive Group C at Franklin's Gardens on August 1.
