WASPS could move out of Adams Park as early as next summer.

Their current tenancy agreement expires in the summer and there is no guarantee they will take up an option to extend it.

In 2012 chairman Mark Rigby said the club would remain in High Wycombe for at least two more seasons years, possibly three.

The first of those deadlines arrive next summer and speculation that Wasps could be ready to relocate by then.

A move to Coventry’s Ricoh Arena, either permanently or just for one-off games, has been heavily mooted in the press, but the club insist they are still exploring a number of options.

Director of rugby Dai Young said: “I certainly understand and support the need for a home ground.

“I was right in the middle of it two seasons ago when everyone realised we were a couple of hours away from going bump.

“So we all realise how important it is to get that sustainability. I’m aware there are a number of opportunities but I’m not at all involved in the nitty gritty.

“That’s not my position. I’m paid to coach the team, not to make those types of decisions. But I have total trust in the right people making the right decisions for Wasps.”

Wasps came to High Wycombe from Loftus Road in 2002, but even when they were winning English and European titles in the 2000s they were still losing money every season.

They committed themselves to the town in 2010 when a new community stadium appeared to be in the pipelines, saying they had no Plan B.

But those proposal fell through and annual losses are now understood to be between £3m and £4m.

New owner Derek Richardson has met those bills and freed up money for squad improvements.

Young said: “It’s not healthy for any club to be reliant on the generosity of one person.

“We won Heineken Cups and so on at Adams Park and certainly we have a loyal bunch of supporters there, which has to be recognised.

“I recognise their support, as does everyone else at the club, but that certainly wouldn’t have stopped us going bump two seasons ago. I think the number one priority of even the hardened supporter at Adams Park would be to make sure Wasps is about in ten and 20 years time.

“That’s the over-riding factor. For whatever reason, even with outstanding success on the field, playing in Wycombe in the current rental agreement hasn’t worked financially.

“That’s not a secret. This isn’t the first regime to realise that. We’ve had to look at other options.”
