WYCOMBE Wanderers stand on the brink of their first promotion in 15 years – and if they achieve it manager Peter Taylor will earn his place in English football folklore.
He will equal Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock’s record of achieving five promotions in the Football League – more than any other currently serving manager.
Blues need just a point from their last game of the season tomorrow against struggling Notts County to guarantee their return to league One after an absence of five years.
And they might not even need to do that to set up mouthwatering clashes against Charlton and Southampton, and possibly Leeds United next season, if Bury and Exeter don’t win.
Taylor said: “It would be a very proud moment for me to equal Neil’s record but the most important thing is the club.
“I’d be even more delighted for the players, the people behind the scenes and the fans.”
Twenty wins and 18 draws has taken the Blues to the brink of automatic promotion and Taylor is calling for his players to produce one more big performance in front of an expectant bumper crowd at Adams Park.
He said: “I’m asking the players to give it one more final big effort. It is a massive prize we are playing for, we know that just one point will put us in the next league, and we are determined to finish the job.
“I’m looking forward to it. The players look look relaxed and in control.”
Blues look set to be backed by a near-full house tomorrow with fewer than 1,500 of the 10,000 tickets left by yesterday lunchtime.
