A crash involving four cars has caused traffic chaos on the M40 tonight, with queues stretching back for ten miles - four hours after the collision.

An injured woman had to be cut free from her car following the crash at 4.45pm.

Her current condition has not yet been confirmed and it is not known if anyone else was hurt.

Engineers remained at the scene until 8.30pm in a bid to clear the carriageway and repair parts of the central barrier.

Long delays of more than an hour are expected to ease after all lanes were reopened.

The accident happened four miles after junction 5 (Stokenchurch) and three miles before junction 4 (Handy Cross).

One lane was closed between the two junctions for more than three hours, and queues at one point stretched back to M40 junction 6 (Watlington).

All southbound traffic was stopped following the crash, but lanes one and two reopened at 6.05pm.

Lane three was reopened at about 8.40pm.
