A little night music for President

9:22pm Wednesday 17th September 2008

Carla Bruni admitted she sometimes woke her husband, French president Nicolas Sarkozy, in the middle of the night by playing her songs.

The former supermodel turned singer-songwriter says her new life as the first lady of France is very different from her other roles.

Before performing live on BBC2's Later... With Jools Holland, she told the presenter: "I don't really mix them up. I separate them. I play my music then I go with my husband when he needs me."

She said he did have some involvement in her music, adding: "I disturb him with it in the middle of the night.

"It's a very different world for him but he's very kind and listens to all my doubts."

Asked about the differences between politicians and musicians she said: "They have a very difficult job and we have a very lovely job. Our job is not even like a job, it's a pleasure.

"I think they need music to relax and to feel good. Everyone needs music."

Asked if she wrote lyrics about her husband, she said: "I write songs about my life."

Ms Bruni performed Tu es ma came, a title she translated as "you're my drug, you're my cup of tea". "It's about love, being addicted to someone in a toxic way and in a lovely way," she added.

The song comes from her third album Comme Si de Rien N'Etait (As If Nothing Had Happened) which was released in July. She later recorded a song with Holland which will be aired on the show on Friday night.
