Two pedestrians have been knocked down and killed on one of the country's busiest motorways.
The men were hit by a heavy goods vehicle on the northbound M6 between junctions 17 and 18.
Police said the HGV's 60-year-old driver, from Selby, North Yorkshire, had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Officers urged witnesses to the crash or the driving before it to get in touch.
The crash happened near Sandbach, north of Stoke-on-Trent.
Road signs were set across the region to advise drivers of the closure and delays in the area.
An empty car was parked on the hard shoulder at the scene.
Officers are trying to establish if it belonged to the victims, who might have broken down and tried to cross the carriageway, or might have been struck as they were emerging from the car.
"It is too early to tell," a police spokesman said.
