Cheryl Gillan, MP for Chesham and Amersham, writes exclusively for the BFP.

For the New Year what I really want is people to make a difference to better the lives of both themselves and others.

Specifically I have hopes for some of our local Chesham & Amersham residents as well as many others beyond the constituency that reflect the sort of decisions we must take and the responsibilities that we bear.

Firstly I’d like to see Translarna available through the NHS for my constituent Archie Hill and the other boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Then, ideally HS2 should be permanently cancelled. Failing that, however, the House of Commons committee would agree to authorise the long tunnel which would protect the entire precious Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and many homes in the Chilterns.

Further afield, I hope to see successful negotiations for the UK’s European Union membership to continue, returning some important decisions to our own country rather than the democratic deficit that currently exists. If they are not successful, then I shall inevitably be forced to vote "Leave". in the forthcoming referendum.

Still further afield, we must continue to do all that we can to ensure that Daesh IS will be defeated and I, in common with so many others, would like a resolution to the Israel/Palestine situation.

But for 2016, the most important thing for me is health and happiness for my family, friends and my constituents.

Wishing you all the very best for the New Year.
