A student from Naphill is planning on walking the 420 miles trip from Southampton to Edinburgh to raise money for World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) Dan Reynolds, 21 an archaeology student is taking on the challenge along with his housemates Ben Hogg and Tom Dennison. They plan to set off on 17 June and will walk up to 25 miles a day in order to complete the walk within a month.
The walk has been inspired by Dan’s grandmother who lost her life to bowel caner two years ago.
He said: “It all happened very fast and it was a real shock to the whole family. This is why I wanted to do something inspirational like this to raise money for cancer research, as I know it’s something my Gran would be proud of”
He added: “When Ben and Tom said they would do it with me I was overjoyed. We’re all pretty healthy and believe in the WCRF’s message that eating well and being physically active can reduce cancer risk. But we are not walkers, we are not hikers and we are not fitness freaks – this is what makes it such a challenge.”
The boys will take a tent on the trip with them but aim to stay at as many friends and family homes across the country on their way in order to get showers and a good nights sleep.
Natalie Tarrant, from the WCRF, said: we are very grateful that Dan, Ben and Tom are doing such an amazing thing for us. We wish them the very best of luck for their challenge and hope it’s a huge success.”
The boys aim to raise £1000 for the charity and the money they raise will go towards research and education programmes into the link between lifestyle and cancer.
