CHEF...1 Chef Gary Weston's roast potatoes were a "smash" hit when Beaconsfield Freemasons laid on a slap up lunch for community heroes on Sunday, November 27.

He got up early to peel 45 lbs of spuds as part of the treat for 60 people who spend much of their time caring for sick and disabled relatives.

Gary, 34, was drafted in at the last minute to the kitchens at the Masonic Centre in Windsor End when a colleague went sick.

He cooked the spuds with his grandma's secret recipe to ensure the roasties became the toasties of the event.

And he scored a hit with the head of Bucks Freemasons, Gordon Robertson, who was applauded as he paid tribute to the cuisine at the lunch.

"Freemasonry is all about friendship, decency, and charity, so the carer's lunch is an important part of the South Bucks masonic calendar.

"They live our values, day in and day out. So they are the real heroes of our community.

"They also appreciated Gary going the extra mile to make sure the meal went ahead on time. He didn't want to let anyone down."

Members of Beaconsfield lodges including Bowen, Cliveden, Cestreham, and Bucks Masters contributed work or cash to the event, which cost more than £1 700. Gordon adds: "Freemasons come from all over the country to enjoy Gary's roasties. It's one of the reasons why the 30 odd chapters and lodges at Beaconsfield are thriving."

Gary and the rest of the team will have just a few days break over the festive period from spud-bashing - as they will then have to prepare for the traditional Burns' Night suppers in the New Year, where "meat and tatties" - along with haggis - are part of the fare.

"My secret recipe has been in the family for generations. If I told you, I would have to kill you...

"But I will give you this tip: a little of bit of garlic and rosemary can go a long way... if you have some nice hot goose fat as well."
