THIS month 30 members were fascinated by Mrs Deakin's talk entitled "Shackleton's Antarctica" describing her cruise from Tierra del Fuego to all points south. Unfortunately we were unable to see her slides, which were no doubt very beautiful, due to a computer malfunction. She was such an excellent speaker, however, that the verbal pictures she painted of the weather, the ice and snow and wildlife transfixed us for an hour or more.

GOLDIE & Petronella are the names of two donkeys who started off a donkey sanctuary, the topic of our September meeting. Fifty-nine members listened to Maggie Taylor’s talk with pictures about the Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth, Devon, where a lot of happy donkeys live out their natural life. Some of these donkeys have even been known to go on therapy visits to adults in nursing and residential homes. Maggie’s talk with pictures of donkeys on the beach conjured up happy childhood memories of sunny summer days.
