GOLDIE & Petronella are the names of two donkeys who started off a donkey sanctuary, the topic of our September meeting. Fifty-nine members listened to Maggie Taylor’s talk with pictures about the Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth, Devon, where a lot of happy donkeys live out their natural life.

Some of these donkeys have even been known to go on therapy visits to adults in nursing and residential homes. Maggie’s talk with pictures of donkeys on the beach conjured up happy childhood memories of sunny summer days.

After the talk the business of the day was commenced together with the events of the last two months. In August we had a social cream tea gathering, with an almost new stall; both very successful. The Gardening Club had an enjoyable barbecue in Laurie & John’s garden in lovely weather. Jean Nedd has been a member of our WI for 25 years and was in July presented with her certificate.

There have been four walks this summer; one to Dorney Lake and the Jubilee River with damsel flies all around, another to Denham Country Park, one to Little Marlow & Bourne Gravel Pits and finally one from Marlow Bottom to Booker. All very enjoyable and well attended. The Denham walk was so very well attended that one member with husband had moored their narrow boat just along from the café and joined the walkers there.

The two reading groups reported on their three books, "Stuart: a Life Backwards" by Alexander Masters, "Atlantic Britain: a Story of the Sea, a Man and a Ship" by Adam Nicholson plus "The Island" by Victoria Hislop.

The Art Group reported on a letter received from the Sailors Society as thanks for all the knitted hats they had received from them. The Art Group finally showed us one of their works, a watercolour of Blackberries by Lily Emmerson, a really lovely study; we now look forward to a complete viewing of all their work!

Finally tea was served which lubricated our by then parched throats enabling us to catch up with each other’s news from the summer.

The competition was a "Model Donkey" which Betty Dorling won!
