Fashion Event in September for charities

Soroptimist International Thames Valley is a club for women from all walks of life who want to make a difference to the lives of women and children much less fortunate.

We are holding a Boden Fashion Party at Bourne End Community Centre on Saturday 11th September from 2 - 6p.m. We hope to raise funds for Wycombe Women's Aid, a charity we have been supporting for many years. We have great discounts and a huge selection of clothes and accessories to try on and buy.

Waitrose have very kindly offered to make one of their Community donation boxes available to Wycombe Women's Aid in September and we would urge all shoppers to make sure their little green buttons go in that box please.

At the Fashion Party we shall also be displaying photographs of our projects based in Sierra Leone. We collect books for the charity BuildonBooks which is based in Marlow with Lori Spragg who has sent out thousands of children's books, encyclopaedias, dictionaries and atlases to schools in Sierra Leone. Lori is a member of our club and would welcome donations of such books.

Another member, Rosie Simbo, is a specialist midwife from Sierra Leone. Rosie has set up a project in her local rural area where women can grow vegetables to feed their families and hopefully earn some money by selling some. Kwashiorkor is a serious problem for children and peanuts, rice etc contain valuable protein which eliminates the disease. It is unusual for women to have any money and this gives them the ability to send their children to school.

While she is in Sierra Leone Rosie also helps train local midwives and medical assistants in safer methods of delivering babies and advises about HIV and FGM.
