Success for Drawing Winners

Joe Graham and Jayne Wilton were declared the winners of One Church Street Gallery’s first Open Drawing Submission, at the preview of the Gallery’s exhibition of selected finalists on Friday, October 8th.
Timed to coincide with the nationwide Big Draw event, the Open Submission attracted a very large number of entries – with over 500 works from more than 140 artists being considered by the selection panel. From these, just 33 pieces were hung in the exhibition. The two winners will be awarded a joint exhibition at One Church Street Gallery in October 2011.
The selection panel for the submission comprised Rod Bugg, whose practice is sculpture and drawing; he is former Dean of Central St. Martins, former Head of Wimbledon College of Art and is currently Emeritus Professor at the University of Arts, London; Polly Binns, artist and former Research Professor of Buckinghamshire New University who is currently a visiting Fellow of Norwich University College of the Arts and Lyndsey Keeling, sculptor and arts director and curator of One Church Street Gallery.
Lyndsey Keeling told us “we had encouraged artists to submit works which demonstrated the broadest possible interpretation of drawing and were gratified by the number, quality and diversity of the entries. Artists entered from all over the British Isles and the standard of submissions was astonishingly high. The finished show is so successful in interrogating the nature of contemporary drawing that we intend the Drawing Open Submission shall become a biennial event.”
