What do you think the big secret is?
11:01am Friday 23rd October 2009 in Your Say
WE all know that Holywell Mead outdoor swimming pool on The Rye is closed and we all know that our cash-strapped council insists it’s not going to reopen.
We also all know there’s a lot of people upset about it.
But what we don’t know is what Wycombe District Council now intends to do with the site.
Councillors say they are drawing up plans which we will be consulted upon, but won’t say what these plans are.
Now I’m not going to bother to ask why they are being so secretive because they will probably tell me that’s a secret as well.
The trouble with secrets, however well-intentioned, is that they lead to two things: a) wild and false rumours and speculation that worry everyone; and/or b) complete apathy on the part of the disengaged public who stop caring in the end, thus rendering the secret meaningless.
So in the spirit of helping things along, I am going to give readers my top five wildly uneducated and uninformed guesses for the council’s intended replacement for the pool: 1 The Frogmoor Fountain will be moved there and will finally be made to work properly by using a feed from the nearby lake; 2 Wycombe Wanderers and Wasps will relocate there from Adams Park, and will utilise the changing rooms and showers that already exist; 3 Tesco will be encouraged to resite its town centre store to The Rye, thereby allowing the council to knock down the old one in Newlands and replace it with a coffee shop because we don’t have enough coffee shops in the town; 4 A giant Starbucks will be placed on Holywell Mead because we don’t have enough coffee shops on the outer edges of the town; 5 There are no ideas for the site because no one can think of any.
Clearly, none of the above are correct, so I will now open this competition up to the public. The best answer will win two free tickets to the Holywell Mead open air swimming pool.
Only trouble is you’ll have to stand outside because it’s shut, but the view’s pretty nice.
Oh, and by the way, councillors are barred from entering this contest because they already know the answer… allegedly.
