REPORTER Andy Carswell attained legendary status in the newsroom last week – after donning a spaceman’s outfit and hopping through potholes in High Wycombe.

‘Carsi’ Carswell was appointed Midweek’s pothole correspondent by me, and initially didn’t mind. But he yelped in utter disgust last week when I suddenly came up with the astronaut idea.

I had driven in all week along Kingsmead Road and was thoroughly fed up with motoring on what others described as a road worse than ‘the surface of the moon’.

So it struck me I should send a Neil Armstrong-type character to check all this out.

Once Carsi had got over his dismay, he completed his mission with aplomb, and boldly went where no other Midweek spaceman had gone before.

The suit and backpack were rather fetching and he caused the entire office to sit up in amazement when he floated in wearing the outfit.

Then he went on warp thrust into Totteridge Lane and caused a stir among passers-by who couldn’t work out why this madman was leaping in and out of holes.

But it was a work of genius and we initially hoped his antics would shock county councillors into reconsidering proposals to slash next year’s pothole budget in half.

And then I suddenly realised it was all in vain.

Councillors would never even bat an eyelid at the sight of a spaceman in High Wycombe – because after all, they’re already on another planet from us.
