Is it safer to double park?

NOW parking fees are set to go up across the Wycombe district, I have a question to ask, and wonder if any of you experts out there can help me.

We all know how easy it is to get fined for making a genuine mistake and failing to display a valid ticket in a parking bay in High Wycombe.

But is it safer – and are you less likely to get booked these days – if you recklessly and wilfully park across double yellow lines on the pavement for several minutes, hold up traffic and obstruct pedestrians?

I ask this because I see people across town doing this day in and day out, presenting a serious danger to the public.

But rarely do I ever see anyone ‘nicked’ for it – because they are all too savvy and drive away in time, leaving chaos in their wake.

Meanwhile, the saps like me who try to park legally – but whose tickets fly off the windscreen, or who pay the wrong tariff – are targeted with near zero tolerance by the authorities.

None of us are paragons of virtue and probably every motorist in the UK briefly breaks the rules on occasions.

But, unlike many, many other drivers, I refuse to lazily leave my car blocking the road outside school entrances, or on double yellows obstructing cars and buses in places such as Green Street.

So answer me this – why does there appear to be one law for cunning and reckless motorists, and another law for those who make innocent errors?
