A visit to Hughenden Park

By ivor »

This week I have been to Hughenden Park. After hearing such wonderful things about the park I was really looking forward to seeing the park for myself. I even prepared an extra special (and extra large) picnic to eat while I was there.

Located on the A4128 Hughenden Road it is part of the historic Hughenden Manor which is owned by the National Trust. There is also access to the park from Coates Lane. At 25 hectares (or 61.7 acres in proper measurement) it’s the largest park in the Wycombe District.

Being such a long way from the town centre I decided to drive there in my trusty car.

After pulling into the car park and taking the picnic hamper out of the boot I was feeling thirsty so I unpacked a bottle of fizzy drink from the hamper to drink while walking along.

Slowly I made my way into the park past a charming lodge which must have been part of the Hughenden Manor estate.

A tarmac path led into the park itself. It was very quiet. A man exercising his dog and a few people who were enjoying a picnic on the grass were the only people there. After walking further down the path a charming brick bridge came into view.

My bottle of fizzy drink was empty so I looked around for a litter bin. Luckily there was one on the right just before the bridge. Unfortunately the litter bin had been set on fire and it was burnt out. It looked an awful sight blighting the view of the park and surrounding trees.

Crossing the bridge I noticed one of the capping stones on a corner pillar had been knocked off. The bricks also seemed rather modern to me. Once over the bridge I stood back to look at the side only to see graffiti scrawled all over it.

Not to be deterred my journey continued.

The trees in the park seemed to create rooms of open space. Quite honestly the secluded nature of these areas made me feel uncomfortable as anyone could easily be attacked there unseen.

Eventually I came to the other side where there was a playground. Once again the playground was surrounded on two sides by trees and was not visible from the nearby road. Unlike the playgrounds at the Rye and Higginson Park there were no children playing there.

The secluded nature of the playground worried me as children could easily be subjected to the unwanted attentions of strangers up to no good without being seen.

After looking at the local Council web site I discovered there are no disabled toilet facilities at Hughenden Park. In this modern age of equality and disability awareness this is a disgrace.

For some Hughenden may have a special place in their memories of the past but today the burnt out litter bin, graffiti covered bridges and poky nature of place made it probably the worst of the parks that I had visited.

As for my picnic, well, it went home uneaten and I left feeling hungry. For somewhere to be so bad that I didn’t want to eat food there says it all.

I would not recommend it as a place visit. Higginson Park and the Rye are far better.

Have you been to Hughenden Park? What do you think to it?

What a load of crap! You don't even know what a park is for! It is there for relaxation.

I was there in Hughenden Park today. There were families out having picnics, children dipping their feet in the stream and even a group of people playing cricket.

Were they upset by the things you mentioned? I think not. They did not analyse every detail like you do, instead they were there to enjoy themselves, in the shade of one of those magnificent trees.

You, sir, are a buffoon.

But the park is a disgrage! The litter bins at Higginson Park and on the Rye were well kept and smart. Not a single litter in Higginson Park or the Rye showed any signs of ever being on fire!

But the surroundings are not as good as they could be. Did you ask anyone if they were happy with such lovely countryside being spoilt by the graffiti and burnt out bins?

OllieNewbury says...
2:02am Sun 5 Jul 09

Oh yes, and even the pitifully small amount of research you have done is incorrect. Hughenden Park is the largest park in the district, at 25 hectares, not the second largest.

Another thing, if you hate metric units so much, why do you give all your area measurements in hectares?

No. I simply wrote a blog about what I saw. The pictures that accompany this blog back up what I said.

But the other blog didn’t seem to cover the park as it is today. It dealt with the past.

My intention is not to ruin the place. No. I would like to see the problems addressed so the park is great once again.

Do you think it’s right there are no disabled toilet facilities there?

I didn't need to! If the people were so unhappy there, they would go somewhere else.

If you had a social life, you would understand that. People go to parks to enjoy themselves in the natural landscape. A bit of well-hidden graffiti (which I didn't spot, as I wasn't looking for it) is nothing.

But perhaps they have gone elsewhere. The Rye and Higginson Park are both extremely busy compared to Hughenden Park.

What about the burnt out litterbin? That isn’t very well hidden is it?

There shouldn’t be any graffiti there at all.

All places have their problems. What sort of person do they have there to set the bin on fire in the first place? I guess there are bad eggs wherever you go.

Perhaps don’t use such bad language.

What a stupid man you are!

The hectametre is a unit of length (10 metres). The hectare is a unit of area (10 ares).

The acre is also a unit of area, equal to 4840 sq. yards.

There are conversion sites which will turn one into the other.

If you don’t see the graffiti and it doesn’t stand out then surely that says that you must be accustomed to seeing it.

I'm sorry to detroy Ivor's illusion but burned out litter bins are often a feature of Higginson park and everywhere else round here for that matter. They usually get replaced pretty quickly.

Also, if you go down to the Court Garden car park of an evening you can be entertained by young men practicing hand brake turns and playing extremely loud music in their cars. Its a lovely atmosphere.

I am sure that vandals will strike in even the most hallowed beauty spot however as you say the problems in Higginson Park usually get sorted quickly. Due to the fact we are dealing with a beauty spot I would have thought that a daily early morning check was in place to correct these issues in which case the burnt out bin in Hughenden Park should have been sorted long before I arrived.

I have photos to prove the existence of the burnt out litter bin and graffiti on the bridge. Those pictures have been published on this blog for all to see.

As for the non-existence of visitors to Hughenden Park, well, look how big the area of land is in the litter bin picture. How long would I have had to wait for that area to be clear of people? It would have been hours unless there wasn’t anyone there in the first place.

But you are saying things to put people off Hughenden Park... oh silly me - Ivor's double standards at work again lol.

I am merely repeating what was reported and what people have said.Difference being of course - this actually happened to people and was not the ramblings of a tw at.
I don't want to put people off anywhere - the Rye and Hughenden Park and indeed Higginsons Park are all equally beautiful and all equally well used.

2 small things Ivor....

2 small things do not a wreck make.
I bet I could go to either Higginson's or the Rye now and find similar...
I won't because I have a life and can see the joy and beauty of the great outdoors.
What a sad life you lead that you get traumatised by a burnt out bin. That you make such a sweepng generalisation about such a wonderful place.

You have yet to admit that you could see the beauty of it .... you can't deny it. ANd yet all you can see is ONE burnt out bin and a faint bit of graffitti.

I would say there is something seriously wrong with you..

Of course I could see the beauty of the place indeed my blog contains the paragraph:

“Slowly I made my way into the park past a charming lodge which must have been part of the Hughenden Manor estate.”

Unfortunately the beauty of the trees and countryside was spoilt by the poor state of repair of the bridge, the graffiti and litter bin.

I'm not going to compliment Ivor when I don't like the blog.

He has written some good ones, but he has also written some pretty poor ones, and expressed very extreme viewpoints, which people will attack.

In my own opinion, comparing these parks is a bad idea, since it will easily generate anger- which, to be frank, is what the BFP wants as it raises the amount of comments.

As I said, I try to remain calm, but sometimes Ivor's views infuriate me.

His blog was very offensive to me.. You see what you may not realise is that I have very very strong attachments to that park for a host of reasons. I and others asked Ivor not to write a blog comparing parks - he was determined to find fault - that is obvious.

Only for Ivor to return

Is it because you can't be logged into the BFP site under two user names at the same time?

Oh and "I like you, you like me ?" if you are a real person then please take your own advice - if you don't like what people write in the comments then just don't read them - it's as simple as that. Personally I'm not going to take the advice of a 27 year old who still calls himself a lad.

When you are dealing with a park that has such beautiful vistas you expect even the smallest of things to be perfect.

But it did ruin my day!
So one bin ruined your day?

That sounds really sad. Like someone crying because they missed Coronation Street!

Hughenden Park is perfect. It's better than the other two anyway.

It wasn’t just the bin it was the graffiti and general feeling on insecurity caused by the sheltered nature of parts of the park.

Perhaps they should cut some of the trees down to open the place up a bit and make it less pokey?

Well so called deputy editor.
Some time ago I wrote to your editor complaining about the inappropriateness of Ivor's blog around the time of a suicide.
I felt it was entirely insensitive and wrong to write a blog about the safety of carparks.

Actually that blog highlighted a serious flaw in the car parks in Wycombe. They should have safety designed into them but alas the car parks are not safe at all indeed there were even warning notices alerting people to the danger of slipping over the edge in icy weather. How safe is a car park when someone can lose their life just because there is ice on the ground?

No. It’s not the mature trees that are the problem. There appear to have been rows of low growing (compared to the older trees) trees planted in rows to break the landscape up. I noticed them as I walked to the children’s playground.

The older trees are all right it’s the newer ones that seem to be the problem.

How true. That's part of beauty of Hughenden Park. The trees make it more secluded, which is what some people want.

Moreover, those trees must be hundreds of years old. We have no right to cut them down, especially if there is no actual reason (like needing to clear the land for development).

Should a children’s playground be secluded?

Highgate cemetery. Lots of trees, lots of dead people too. I wonder if there is a link? I think we should be told.

I hadn't realised before but the graves of Karl Marx and Herbert Spencer are opposite one another. Their relationship extends beyond their retail emipre and into the graveyard :-)

It was not offensive or inflammatory - it merely stated the facts.
Ivor is allowed to say what he likes and it goes unchecked.
Why? because everytime someone comments or clicks on this page it generates income for this so called paper.

He therefore knows he is untouchable.
I spoke to the chief reporter from the BFP about the car park issue.
His attitude was one of complete and utter "couldn't care less".
When I used the most profane language known to man, deliberately I might add, everyone went "OMG" and I was banned.
When Ivor says such nasty and snide things that DO inflame , that are INTENDED to provoke, the BFP just bleat out the "free speech" rhetoric.
Well you will not stop me.
I will copy and paste this into a word document and carry on...
Ivor WILL go too far - he is on the verge of it now. Someone WILL sue and the so called reputation of this paper will be ruined..
So I will advise the regulars as I did before... if you ignore him, if you do not comment, then he will not be able to inflame and upset.

Do your worse BFP - ban me again, I will be back... ( OMG I am sooo Arnie!)

Wow, so many pointless posts.
I'd just like to add another - Hughenden Park is perfect the way it is. Ok it might need a new bin, but hey that one has been burnt out for about 20 years. I hope the teenagers continue to stay in the Rye, drinking, robbing and stabbing each other, and leave Hughenden the way it is, a very nice peaceful area for families.

I get the impression, although obviously I don't believe it, that the sight of the burnt out bin, a small bit of graffiti and a missing cornerstone from the bridge rather put Ivor off his substantial picnic, so no doubt he couldn't manage an ice-cream either!

I agree, and I never noticed the graffiti or the bin.

Why? Becasue I was there to enjoy myself.

Hughenden Park is perfect, and that includes the manor, the church, the cream teas! and the stream.

If you ever want peace and quiet, find a secluded spot and just relax. Wonderful...

demoness says...
10:24pm Mon 6 Jul 09

Thanks Fred, and all the others.
I have to explain why I am so very very upset about this latest piece of Ivor rubbish.

Hughenden park plays a huge part in who I am, My parents went on their first date there over 60 years ago. My childhood was one of happy memories and picnics every summer. The park was a safe and beautiful place.
When the stream dried up ( as being chalk based it was wont to do) I mourned. When the water came back again, I rejoiced.
Years later I had my first kiss in the park. Years later I brought my own children back for picnics and fun.
When my lovely Dad died, I went and sat in the park and thought about him.

I have spent hours i that place - and it has not changed. It is still beautiful , majestic and unspoiled.
When Ivor said he was going to do a blog comparing the parks, I asked him not to. How can you compare beauty? But I also thought he would surely see the majesty and peace of one of the most beautiful places on earth.
But he didn't - he looked and looked and saw a couple of things wrong . In his usual inflammatory style he dissed the whole park.
Yes it did upset me - yes I did cry. Stupid I know but I hate the fact that he wrote it. I hate the fact that he said trees should be cut down, and I hate the fact that he cannot see past a burnt bin.

So in my way I went all out to shock and used the worse words I could think of. Why? Because Ivor attempted to destroy beauty and majesty with pettyness and spite. To my mind he is the one who used profanities - not me.
I will NEVER forgive him for what he tried to do - never.
He is a pathetic specimen of humanity and I feel sorry for the fact that all of the beauty of this world, contained in one glorious space was hidden from his blind and indifferent eyes.

You have not won Ivor - I have a life, I can see the beauty of nature and a small bit of graffiti and a burnt out rubbish bin will not hide that from me.
Ivor - you are truly a pitiful creature. BUT you need the BFP to keep your pathetic ego stoked - so carry on - you are, and always will be, one of life's losers.
All of us can see this - you can't . So remain happy in your ignorance - it is probably better like that anyway.

Ivor, you just don't get it.

You saw a tiny percentage of the park and chose to make far more of its flaws than was necessary. To say that the 3 flaws that you saw put you off your picnic is quite simply unbelievable. Go back to the park and walk around it all, even if you can't manage that in one day make a few visits, at least then you will be more credible when you next write about it.

Mother nature is a wonderful thing and if you can't see beyond a bin, graffiti and a missing brick or two then you really are a sad individual.

The church of St Michael & All Angels, more commonly known as Hughenden Church is the burial place of Benjamin Disraeli, who died in 1881. Queen Victoria could not attend the funeral herself, but she later visited the grave and erected the memorial that can still be seen.

The church is also a celebrity church (!), having featured in several episodes of Midsomer Murders, as well as location footage in Gerry Anderson's puppet shows of the 1960s, which were filmed in nearby Slough.

It's amazing what a bit of Googling will reveal! I had cream tea once at the church- it was delicious, and very good value as well.

As you are determined to tar Hughenden Park with brush that actually belongs to the Rye - at least there is factual evidence that sadly people are being attacked on the Rye.
There is no such concern about Hughenden Park so that is another apology you owe.
