Eden's second birthday

By Oliver Newbury »

Since I’m not going to be here on 13th March, I’ll publish this now. On that day, two years ago Eden opened and I think it’s been a great addition to the town. It’s certainly livened things up in the town centre and provided us with much needed entertainment facilities, especially the bowling alley and cinema complex.

Of course some stores are empty and it is true that some shops simply moved out of the old premises elsewhere in town. That is a problem but it doesn’t stop Eden being a good thing in my opinion.

Some people don’t like it- their entitled to their views and I respect that. But as far as I can see, the benefits of Eden far outweigh the negatives. Add to the positives the fact that we got a new bus station, library and tourist information centre. I think Wycombe’s done alright in the past half-decade.

As someone that suffers from mild claustrophobia and also at times panic attacks from feeling too enclosed I really like Eden. It's light, bright and airy and the shops and entertainment facilities are fantastic.

My attitude exactly. If it's cold in an open shopping centre, you can wear a jumper. If it's too hot and stuffy in a closed centre, what can you do? (apart for taking your clothes off, something I wouldn't recommend!)

I like to be able to breathe fresh air whilst walking and shopping.

The trouble is Ollie, people can't get it into their thick heads that Eden was never intended to be a closed shopping mal.It was intended to be like a street.
The plans made it obvious all the way a long.
And as for those who say it is ugly - no it isn't.What is ugly is the carbuncle that is Tescos as they had to build around it.
But the main part of Eden with it's airy feeling and glass everywhere is lovely.
I, like you, am fed up to the back teeth of the negativity towards the place on here.
Wycombe is no longer a sleepy little market town. It is the second largest town in Bucks ( MK is the largest but is a unitary authority so doesn't really count). It is a busy commuter town and has a thriving university. It needed the facilities to match this.
I still think that the High Street needs something urgent doing to it.
I only ever visit Eden now to go shopping as I am sure do many others. We need new life into that part of town.

Happy Birthday, Eden!

Any cake?

Fully agree with MelOllieNess' comments.

Eden - best thing that's happened in Wycombe since the Roman villa...

Open and airy. The way it should be.

Erm... any cake?

It is a long way from perfect, bit is nowhere near the disaster some people describe it as.
.
Has it boosted Wycombe's economy? Oh yes.
.
Does it bring people to Wycombe who otherwise would not come? Without doubt.
.
Will it be the causal force that breathes new life into the High Street? Probably, but we will find out for sure soon enough.
.
Is it ugly from the street side? Hell yes, it is a shopping centre!!
