Two unfortunate closures

By Oliver Newbury »

In the past few days I’ve noticed several strange closures in Wycombe. Here are two.

The first is Richoux, the restaurant in that funny building near the library. It’s been quiet for months now with just a notice on the door saying “We are sorry to inform our customers that Richoux is closed for refurbishment until further notice”. Is that code for ‘we won’t be re-opening’? The High Wycombe restaurant is no longer featured on the Richoux website, and there have been no press releases or anything. Rather annoying really, as I did enjoy eating there. The food was very good though quite pricey. Whilst never packed it was never dead in there when I visited.

So what has happened? I did email them a few weeks ago asking them, and I got no response. That’s good customer service!

The second of my two case studies is Past Times, the gift shop on Union Parade. I like that shop, with its selection of old-fashioned toys and the like. When I passed the store yesterday I saw two large signs: “This store is closing. Your nearest store is Windsor”. That really disappointed me. Windsor is not easy to get to from Wycombe and hardly a suitable alternative. It was only after emailing them (and getting a reply!) that I was told that the store was only ever meant to be temporary to cover the peak season over Christmas. Why weren’t we told this back then? At least then I wouldn’t have become too accustomed to them being here.

Two unfortunate closures. Let’s hope that number stays low.

That's better! Though I'm still slightly peeved that the HW store was only temporary.

Past Times shops have been closing all over the place for the last couple of years.
As for Richoux - well it was a place that was neither one thing or the other.
I think £25 for afternoon tea for 2 people slightly over the top.. don't you?

Oh. I knew their food was expensive so I limited myself to a main and drink- I could have a dessert at home!

i was always confused by ricoux, was it a coffee shop, a restaurant, a snack bar?

as for past times, i was aware it was a 'pop up store' as when it was advertising jobs it was only advertising temporary positions and the furniture in the store was very basic - nothing fixed

Richoux intrigued me much like Fishy. I can't quite see where it sat in the great pantheon of fine dining in the heart of Wycombe. OK, it was probably the nearest we had to fine dining, and being a chain was (or is, in the event the closure is temporary) by definition a mile or more from there.
.
I never used it - I looked at the menu and was not sufficiently inspired by it to contemplate the price point. That is the very essence of marketing failure.
.
It is sad, as a top hole diner would be a positive add to the locale, don't you know, and presented in the right fashion would surely go a bomb. After all, if it served traditional English fare, even our friendly local imbecile would save up his meagre (or is it paltry?) income and grace the joint with his enormous presence.
.
So went Cafe Rouge, a chain that offered decent, if not fine, dining in the French-ish vernacular.
.
Oh well, back to the good old reliable inspiration free solid not too fancy sometimes a bit disappointing but hey they are on minimum wage you know chains.
