What has Wycombe come to?

By ivor »

There is nothing I like more than my regular walk around Wycombe town centre indeed it is the highlight of my day.

Recently someone told me the DIY store in Bellfield Road was closing so yours truly decided to visit to see what was happening.

After walking the length of the High Street and passing through the grounds of the Parish Church I soon found myself heading towards Frogmoor.

Passing the magnificent John Hearn shoe shop I paused for a moment to look in the window only to see a line of white dust bags at the front of the shop with a lady busy clearing the shop and filling yet more bags.

Oh dear. What a sad sight. What has Wycombe come to?

Pausing for a moment to looking at the shoes still on display in the window it became too much for me and I just managed to walk past the shop before the first tear came to my eye.

After a short walk up Oxford Road the DIY shop came into view. Making my way up the flight of steps that lead to the entrance it became clear the store was indeed closing down.

What has our become of our town? We're going backwards not forwards.

Despite businesses in the town centre folding left, right and centre it seems the powers that be are still intent of pushing through the wacky plans for a new, and in my opinion completely unnecessary, stadium.

Did you see the short list of sites that were published recently as part of the £750,000 initial study?

Was it really tactful to list the Little Marlow Gravel Pits as a suitable site especially when the local Marlow football team had their planning permission turned down for a stadium that was seventy five times smaller than the one being proposed now?

Has the stadium farce come to symbolise everything that is wrong with Wycombe?

While businesses fail and the fabric of Wycombe town centre is town apart how on earth can anyone even consider building a new stadium let alone short-list sites that were only a few months ago considered unsuitable.

There are far higher priorities in Wycombe.

The inclusion of the Little Marlow site is merely putting two fingers up to the local community who had their planning application rejected.

I wonder how much of the £750,000 was wasted producing the list of nineteen possible sites?

Everyone keeps telling me that the aerodrome will end being chosen as the preferred site and I would stick my neck out and predict that the name of firm that gets the construction contract starts with a letter close to the start of the alphabet.

Rather than wasting precious money on a stadium that nobody wants let's use the money to rejuvenate Frogmoor and breathe life back into Wycombe town centre.

Of course getting Wycombe trading again would be beneficial to the town so it's unlikely to be done....

What do you think?

Quite a few people on the main news site seem pleased that Matalan is moving into the premises that the “DIY shop” currently occupies.
~
Ivor, you invited us to suggest topics for your blogs so here are just a few. This is your opportunity to stop moaning and look on the bright side. Will you take that chance, I wonder?
~
WDC has adopted a new local development order this week, aimed at helping to regenerate the historic quarter bounded by White Hart Street, Queen Square, Church Street, Oxford Street and Bull Lane. Will this help to fill some of the vacant units and will this be good for our town? Discuss.
~
The Rye in High Wycombe and Higginson Park have both received Green Flag Awards this week. That is a very positive thing for the town, isn’t it? Or is theirs better than ours? Discuss.
~
Don’t forget the Butterfly Walk at Gomm's Wood Nature Reserve on Saturday. Then you will be able to tell us with a lot more authority where our butterflies and bees “have gone”. This is organised by the WDC Woodland Rangers and will be a nice trip out for you.
~
Of course, you could just persist in depressing everyone.

Well, I would rather have the DIY shop. It have been there for years ever since the old railway goods yard was closed and the land converted.

Thank you for those suggestions. I will of course thoroughly research them and write about them. I am sure they will make for interesting blogs.

LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!! :)))))))))

Ivor for goodness sake STOP with the putting down of Wycombe.
This is the most melodramatic blog I have seen for a while.
The store was losing money so the company closed it down - it was a coporate decision - nothing to do with WDC.
There is a fantastic shop going in there instead which will make loads of money.

So why does an established shop lose money? Why are so many established businesses folding?
~
Could it be because the trading conditions in Wycombe are not right because certain parts of the town have been neglected?

Well, the car park was always full but when the electrical store a short distance away closed I fear there was less reason for people to go there.

Actually I found the shop didn't sell what I wanted so its passing will not affect me as much as the loss of John Hearn will. However is always sad to see a business fail....

Wycombe has lost two shops in two weeks. There must be something wrong....

It was a long standing business, as I have said in an earlier comment there have been a DIY shop there ever since the railway goods yard that previously occupied the site closed in the late 1970's.

I understand the new shop is a clothes shop. No doubt they will fail to stock larger sizes thus disenfranchising people like myself....

No, it's because it's a big, faceless corporate hit by the recession & time wasters wandering around not buying stuff. Take Isaac Lord - a great independent shop which has been in the town for hundreds of years. This shop probably is in one of the worst, most neglected trading locations in Wycombe yet it's still going strong. In fact, the closure of Focus may be a blessing for Lord's and I for one, would rather support my local, independent retailer than some faceless chain.

I made a mistake once and went into a Matalan store, and will never go in one again. The goods on sale were,I thought, of a shoddy quality, dirty and creased where they had been kicked arround the floor for a whilt before anybody thought about picking them up. If there was a box or some other container to house the item, then that was invariably broken or in a dire state. I found that it was on the whole the same old tat that a lot of other cheep shops sold, but under the Matalan banner. No, the only time I will be going into that part of town will be to go to the pet shop. Matalan, a gloryfied 99p shop.

Ah you see p.r , that Greenwich Village was a nursery , incubator and eventually a hot-bed of the Beat Poet generation ( Allen Ginsberg , William Burroughs Dylan Thomas , Rod McKuen even Jack Kerouac) frequented or lived in that area of New York.

Perhaps if enough interest is generated and submitted to the powers to be - we can have a town that is up there with some of the best

Perhaps you should write the blog yourself - It is the fact that people are replying to this blog that has generated your input otherwise people would just ignore it

If the campaigns that the BFP have not worked, what would you suggest?

Ah, if they are in to choreography then they must be dancers!

Thank you for clarifying that point.

Indeed I think the townspeople are outraged by the way things are going in Wycombe at the moment.
~
The closure of John Hearn has turned an awful lot of people against the powers the be for their inaction and killing off of parts of the town centre.
~
I think the only way to deal with the powers that be is to try to get a town council or unitary authority in Wycombe. That way we would have new governance rather than the stale stagnation from the current leadership. The only problem would be how would stop the current people from standing for election and ruining the new administration?

I like Wycombe the way it is. I suggest you read Ollie's blog. It is written by a young person born and bred in Wycombe and I personally think he would do a far better and unbiased blog than Ivor would.

At the end of the day though, I visit Wycombe for the fantastic shopping - there is nowhere like it in Bucks.

I am sure I am more than capable of writing an unbiased blog on the subject! If I represent the views of the majority of people then how can we be ignored?
~
I am sorry but I have to say that the halcyon days of shopping in Wycombe are coming to an end. The great shops like John Hearn, GA Wood, Murray's, Davey's Toy Shop, Aldridge;s, Keen's Model Shop have sadly gone and all we have are large-chain stores that sell the same things in every town in the country. Where is the individuality?

The new shops sell all that I require and more.
Thanks for your opinion but I disagree.

The new Wycombe - shopping, restaurants, theatre, cinema is great.

But you carry on moaning dear... you do it so well.

I guess we must live very different lives then. All too often the shops of Wycombe are unable to provide the goods that I want.
~
Sadly the town centre these days is more about sitting in a cafe than actually doing the weekly shopping.
~
The independent retailers are slowly disappearing only to be replaced with large chain stores. Where has the individuality gone?

Ivor, most of what you say is generally sanctimonious ill-informed drivel, but I have to say I'm in complete agreement about the new stadium that WWFC does not need, and indeed will threaten its very survival just so the greed of individuals can be satisfied.

As a lifelong supporter I want to see the club go from strength to strength. However going from their present situation where they own their own perfectly adequately sized ground for a club of their stature and receiving rent from Wasps (whether it's an adequate amount is subject to conjecture), they will be the junior tenant in a ground share with Wasps as they generate the higher attendences and thus are more profitable. Playing in a quarter-full ground will generate a sterile and joyless atmosphere - it's bad enough half of the time when Adams Park is half-full - and hardly encourage new fans to come along and may fail convince those who grew up with the often electric atmosphere at Blues games in the 90s to bother coming along anymore.

The worst thing of all is the fact that Steve Hayes has insidiously taken over both clubs putting on a sugar daddy act to naive fans who though the vast sums he was 'pumping' into the club were gifts rather than debt to him. Now he is in a position where he can use WWFC as a pawn in his money-spinning property development plans he may well just kill off our proud football club that, whilst hardly Real Madrid, is the envy of many a similarly sized town across the country. That public money should be used to help fund this all is a damning indictment of the corruption at WDC.

I quite agree with you, if you did not care for the town then you would not comment. I find it odd that so many people chastise your blogs Ivor yet your blog alone provokes the most comments, keep up the good work mate.

Indeed I fully agree with you. Why should the taxpayers of the town end up footing the bill for a new stadium when the current on is perfectly good?
~
I would rather the money went to bail out John Hearn....

Indeed I intend to carry on for as long as possible. Unless someone speak out then then powers that bill will just ride roughshod over us unopposed.
~
I think it is awful what has been done to Wycombe in recent years and to see some of our most respected businesses folding up is awful.... We need urgent action to save this town now and the last thing we need is a new football stadium.

Thank you for your valued comment.

Come on Ivor, it has its problems. But there's Eden which has everything from restaurants to a bowling alley. I must say Focus was good and the only major competition to Wickes but sometimes change has to happen...
