How to hang Christmas decorations

By ivor »

A few days ago yours truly paid a visit to my friend who spurred me on to write a blog last year on “How to dress your Christmas tree”.

This year their tree was much better, probably a seven out of ten, however their other decorations such as paper chains and bunting were a complete disgrace.

Naturally yours truly broached this delicate topic and spent few moments instructing my friend on how to hang their decorations after all dressing trees and hanging decorations are something that I consider myself knowledgeable in.

Even though nobody apart from myself is likely to see them I always spend time putting up paper chains at Bigun Hall indeed the decorations and tree make Christmas don't they?

The technical name for a modern tin foil paper chain is a “garland” rather than paper chain which refers to decorations made of crepe or tissue paper.

Thankfully every room in the Hall still has picture rails around the walls so its very easy to affix the decorations. Usually I decorate just the grey drawing room and the billiards room.

Don't forget to wipe the picture rail over with a damp cloth to remove any dust or dirt that may have built up over the year.

Next, starting by the door, push a small drawing pin into the top of the picture rail in the corner of the room so it is out of sight.

Then put a pin in at the opposite end of the picture rail followed by another in the middle. It always helps if you use a tape measure to find the dead centre after all there is nothing worse than lopsided decorations.

To get a good effect two garlands should be used on every wall.

Modern decorations are made of tin foil and have a little loop to hang over the drawing pin making the process of hanging them straight forward.

If the decorations hang too low then simply put another pin in the middle and hook the garland over it to reduce the depth of the loop.

In the middle of each wall there should be a centrepiece decoration such as large hanging bell, star or tree affixed to the middle drawing pin to attract attention to the centre of the room.

Here at the Hall I still use proper paper chains made of crepe paper dating back to the mid 1960's indeed I even have some from the 1940's. The holy grail of paper chains were manufactured by a company called “Paul Jones” another name to look out for is “Apex”.

Nowadays these decorations are extremely rare and highly valuable indeed you can expect to pay anything from twenty pounds upwards for a genuine “Paul Jones” paper chain from the 1960's.

Of course the old paper chains were highly combustible and the safety officer at the local fire station would probably have a fit knowing I was still using them.

This year I invested in some of these newfangled LED lights for my Christmas tree, the lights seemed so tiny so yours truly bought several boxes to make up the same wattage as my old lights, however I fear I have overdone it.

My seven foot tree has over a thousand LED lights on it and looks spectacular however the lights are so bright you can see them from outside through the curtains even when the curtains are drawn!

I hope you have found my guide to putting up paper chains useful, maybe you have some tips on hanging Christmas decorations that you would like to share with us?

What do you think?

I'm sure Ms. Allsopp would use Cath Kidston paper/material for her paper chains rather than crepe paper.

As you say you can never have too many lights, all too often a Christmas tree is let down by not having enough lights on it. The LED lights are so bright and they don't use too much electricity either.

...does that include the baubles? I'm never sure whether to include those in the overall assessment. Some think them essential, others decoration and supplement to the main event.
.
As for getting from a 7 to a 10, you talk so much about the wonders of Bigun Hall yet we never see photographic proof. if your chains are exemplary, then let's see the proof!
.
You also imply, frequently, you are facing financial ruin and yet here you are - living alone - with a lit tree consisting of 1000s of bulbs hooked up to the mains.
.
As the youngsters say: just sayin.

Yes, it's essential to have well hung baubles at Christmas time. A tree does not look right without them. I has pure glass baubles, they may be very fragile but they look terrific however I did see a tree this year with pure white baubles covered with glitter which looked nice.
~
I have shown you a picture of my Paul Jones paper chains and you tell just by looking at them how old they are. What more do you want?
~
Indeed my paltry income means that financial ruin could be around the next corner but I must soldier on and try my best. Those newfangled LED bulbs don't take that much to work indeed I bought the same wattage in LED's as my old filament bulbs used to draw so there will be no extra expense from running the Christmas tree lights even though there are more bulbs.

It probably didn't pay as well as being a rock star, or radio presenter.

The paper chains are not actually on the tree, they go around the walls and hang off the picture rail. It would be too dangerous for even me to put such flammable items close to the LED bulbs even though they do not give off that much heat.

'What more do I want?' That, Ivor, is a very dangerous question to ask a woman and I shall refrain from answering it for fear of bamboozling you. Needless to say, some tired old paper chains sagged over my trim and tight arches are not what I have in mind, nor is this preposterous LED tree sucking the life from everything with its overpowering shine. Worse, your vapid, hollow baubles swinging about the place like deflated balloons would only signify, to me, that the party is over.
.
A photo of the finished display would be much more effective, don't you think? It's like telling us you have new shoes and only taking a picture of the box.
.
Honestly, Ivor, it's times like these I see why everyone else doubts your inconsistent existence. If it weren't for my unwavering faith in Santa, the Tooth Fairy and Haitian voodoo, I'd say you were cad, a bounder, and a liar, not a thoroughbred man of integrity.
.
I'm surprised you don't make better use of the Chilterns's natural beauty and forage for holly, twigs and mushrooms to make your own wreath or something, with a bit of dear mother's ribbon.

Well, let me assure you personally there is no need to doubt my integrity. Indeed I have never been called a cad or a bounder before....
~
There is a holly bush at the Hall right the end of the formal lawn, its in the neighbouring property and earlier in the year I hacked it back with some shears to stop it goring over the fence. Maybe I should have left it then I could have used the holly to make a wreath to hang on the door of the Hall?

There was a lovely service at All Saints a few weeks ago with local schools; I've seen some in the town centre. Some neighbourhood children used to make half-hearted attempts round my way. Perhaps a blog for the decline in carol singing is in order, though what with your hatred of trick-or-treaters perhaps your house is on a list that gets distributed to schools as a 'no go' area, hence no visitors. Had to say this Ivor, but just because something doesn't beat a path to the doors of Bigun Hall doesn't mean it doesn't exist or signifies a moral decline and the beginning of the end.
.
With my Ivor hanky-hat on: 'Perhaps children do not see the value of singing carols any more and would prefer to stay at home on their newfangled phones playing computer games? What do you think?'
.
Edna's finished for xmas and is on the cooking sherry. Time for a lie down.

If I had known I would have gone down to All Saints and enjoyed the carols. Yes, maybe I should do a blog in memoriam of the art of carol singing however there is only one blog to Christmas (on Saturday) and I was going to do a “Memories of Christmas Past” blog then.
~
As usual I will be doing a special blog on Christmas Day at 3pm.
~
Yes, I too fear the youngsters of today are more interested in Christmas presents like computer games than partaking in the traditional activities like carol singing and doing good for the community.
~
Take it easy on the sherry, the very devil himself lurks in the alcohol and if you have too much you may start behaving like the drunken yobbos who run rampage through Wycombe town centre on a Saturday night....

Oh dear Ivor, you are all over the place at the moment. In 2007 & 2008 your tree was 7ft tall (including the foot high angel) and as usual, you took it round to your neighbours along with all the decorations.
.
Last year the tree which "we have every year in the drawing room at Bigun Hall" had grown to 8ft.
.
This year it is still 8ft fortunately "even though nobody apart from myself is likely to see them I always spend time putting up paper chains at Bigun Hall indeed the decorations and tree make Christmas don't they?" What about your poor neighbour?
.
In 2008 "While I was at my neighbour’s house I measured their oven and went out to buy the largest possible turkey that will fit in." This year "It's a terrible shame that I have to rely on the charity of others (i.e. my neighbour) and that I can't support myself...." Oh dear, oh dear. I don't know who to feel the most sorry for.
