What's on television?

By ivor »

Over Christmas I was lucky enough to be invited to spend some time with my neighbour.

Indeed it was a most enjoyable time most of which was spent eating large meals or chatting. In the evening we even sat and watched some television.

Of course yours truly does not have a television set, due to financial pressures the last TV left many years ago and the licence cancelled.

After watching some of the Christmas offerings available on the TV I must say that it was a complete load of rubbish.

If the programmes weren't featuring someone being shot then they eirher featured hospital scenes, talent contests, celebrities dancing around or scenes that were rather close.

The so called modern comedy programmes didn't even raise a smile on my face indeed some of them were bordering on the disgusting.

What happened to the good old days of light entertainment?

Back in the 1970's the television was at the heart of entertainment and the comedy programmes were extremely funny.

I can still remember all the enjoyment we would have on a Saturday night sitting down to watch great programmes such as “The Two Ronnies”, “The Val Doonican Show”, “Are you being served?” and comedy sketches featuring the great Dick Emery and Eric Sykes.

Sadly I fear the modern day performers and comedy shows aren't a patch on those of forty years ago.

Take a look at the following clip and see what I mean ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xx1YLY4UkVo ) now didn't you find that funny? When I saw it the other evening I practically burst my sides laughing!

How about this hilariously funny clip ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNvvkv4UDdM ) or even this one ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTx3XGcSKV4 ).

Sadly the ravages of political correctness have taken a grip on those making the TV programmes and the masses of today are being forced to watch bland, watered down rubbish designed not to cause offence.

In fact I'm glad I don't have a TV any more.

How people can get pleasure from seeing other suffer on the receiving end of crime and violence I shall never know.

With all the nasties being shown on the small screen is it any wonder that crime is so rife in our society?

Even today robberies, armed attacks, arsons and other violent crimes feature on the news section of this very site.

I fear the youngsters of today who commit the crimes that blight out society are only copying what they have seen on TV thinking it to be acceptable behaviour.

What do you think?

It was both. Some of the comedy programmes contained material which I found rather close and other programmes were as weak as water. Please note I found the programmes close and that is just a reflection on my tastes. The programmes on the edges of acceptability are often crude and only have one or two somewhat offensive parts in them just to make a point.

I think the politically correct brigade have killed off comedy by making those who create it live in fear of what may happen if they overstep the mark....

not really, no - you can't have it both ways, either tv has become 'too PC' (whatever that is supposed to mean to begin with) or its become needlessly offensive. I suppose if you had your way, you'd have bernard manning in 'the comedians', and the black & white minstrel show back on the tv? that's presumably the heyday of tv you reminisce over?

on a different topic, I think you should go out of your way (as I'm certain you could if you wanted to) to delete every duplicate comment that appears on your blog, as it gives a hugely overinflated impression of how popular you are... on some of your blogs, it seems that more than half the comments are duplicates - the fun thing is this: if you refuse, it kind of proves that you're only in it for the numbers (as "demoness's" blogs (which I've recently discovered) prove that you do indeed have the ability to do this) :)

Well, the black and white minstrel show was quite entertaining however the attire of the artists is sadly unacceptable today. Some of jokes told by Bernard Manning were funny but alas some were completely unacceptable.
~
By “PC” I am saying that in modern times people are too careful not to offend. Back in the 1970's people said what they thought and the worry of making offence was not ruling their lives....
~
I can assure you that I am not writing my blogs just for the “numbers” the site sometimes goes wrong and I end up with duplicate comments. Let's not worry about this slight problem shall we?

This is the kind of easy trash that convinces me a team of hacks on the BFP is writing this stuff – ‘what shall we make him say now?’
I know – we’ll say he can’t name the reference books in the library at Bigun Hall – in case he ‘asked to DONATE THEM TO THE NATION!!!’ (Hysterical laughter.)
‘Let’s say people criticise him because of his SUCCESS in life!!!!’ (MORE hysterical laughter.)
Would Steve Cohen care to confirm or deny that Charles Mann was a house column and that no such person exists?

Happy New Year Morag, hope you have a great year and visit some more fab places. Have a lovely evening, with some wine, I will raise a glass to you, enjoy.
Thanks Lorraine - same to you!

Btw Ivor, did you know that you have disappeared off the Blogs tab at the top of this page? You have been replaced with "Makepeace with Chess". Hope it isn't a bad omen :-)

Yes, I would think they do however there is a big difference between reading the comment and experiencing the web site going wrong when a comment is posted.

What? So when they read it they don't notice that comments are duplicated or triplicated? Not very observant considering their profession?

Obviously I can't speak for those reading my blog in saying what they think but maybe they think the person making the comment posts it twice just to reinforce their point?

Oh dear, I had to go and have a lie down. I don't really know where to start.... the responsibility is all a bit much for me, tbh.

Well, I know all too well about the weight of responsibility and looking after things indeed yours truly is a master at it.

I should have realised that it takes a true leader of men like yours truly to take charge, so just rest easy and I will take the burden from you....

See how heavy the weight of burden can be, but to a man of action and responsibility like me its water off a ducks back!
