Goodbye 2011 - Hello 2012!

By ivor »

Well, another year has been consigned to the history books.

The old saying goes its “out with the old and in with the new” however from what I have seen of the recent so called improvements in Wycombe it would be more appropriate to say “out with the new and in with the old”!

With the dawn of 2012 just a few moments away it seems like a good idea to reflect on the events of the past year and look forward to what’s in store in next year.

In the past twelve months we thankfully saw a successful conclusion to the Booker stadium débâcle, sense prevailed and the ridiculous scheme was killed off.

The stopping of the stadium just shows the power the residents of Wycombe can muster when they all pull together.

It also shows the madness of the decisions being taken by the powers that be to start such a farcical scheme in the first place. Sadly many hundreds of thousands of pounds of our Council Tax money was wasted before the scheme was stopped.

There was some good news when the Holywell Mead open air pool re-opened. Why it was ever closed I shall never know, maybe we should put the closure down to yet another daft decision from the powers that be?

The best thing to happen to yours truly in 2011 was being given the honour of writing a weekly column in the printed version of the Bucks Free Press hopefully the readers will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it.

Maybe I should stick my head out and make some predictions for 2012?

Well, I think there will be public outrage if the plans go ahead for the installation of a hideous TV screen on Frogmoor indeed I think it will turn out to be a public relations disaster for the powers that be comparable with the Booker stadium fiasco.

Currently a petition (see links at end of this blog) is gathering momentum calling for the scrapping of the TV screen and the restoration of Frogmoor back to its former glory including the installation of an exact copy of the Victorian fountain that previously graced Frogmoor.

We mustn't forget the magnificent Library Gardens at the end of the High Street which are also under threat of being turned into a public picnic area. Rest assured that yours truly will be fighting tooth and nail to make sure they remain as they are.

In 2012 I predict we will see the rugby team leaving our town and the football club will possibly have a new owner which may even see the club return to the ownership of the fans themselves.

I can also confidently predict that my blogs will go from strength to strength over the next twelve months.

The popular “Buildings of Wycombe” blogs will return next Saturday and I will be introducing other regular themed blogs on “Saving Money”, “Gardening Hints” and an occasional series entitled “The Lost Building of Wycombe” to feature some of the buildings that have sadly been demolished over the years.

I think that just about sums things up so I would like to wish all my readers a peaceful, prosperous and most of all happy New Year!

What do you think?

*If you would like see Frogmoor restored back to its former glory including the magnificent Victorian fountain you can sign the paper version of the petition and collect blank petition forms (so you can collect signatures yourself) from Kitsch Me Kwik, 5 Queen Victoria Road (at the end of the High Street by the traffic lights). For more information you can join the Facebook group ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/269895336392507 ) or sign the on-line version of the petition at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/fountain-for-frogmoor-high-wycombe

The Bucks Record Society has published the 1798 Muster Roll for the County of Bucks – this is a list of able bodied males in the county between the ages of 15 and 60 capable of acting in a military capacity. The names are listed by parish and occupation within it. Which page and which parish shows the existence of Biguns?

Yes, after all it would not be offensive to say that 'disabled people would probably not even want to use the museum' and talk about averting your eyes from revealing dressed 10 year old girls. I see you have omitted these from your synopsis of the year.

Another long and sad evening gawping and sniggering at the screen while the rest of us were out signing Auld Lang Syne and wishing each other well. And then, it would seem, up again at 5am and on the attack once more. Or was he at it all night?

Turn off the computer Lawrence; leave the house; get some fresh air. Stop hating yourself. It's a happy world out there - nobody will hurt you.

Just try and smarten yourself up a bit first. Stick your pants and vest in the wash for starters, you're a mess.

Have you looked through every page in search of the Biguns?
Yes - every page and there are no Biguns there - nor are Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Conan the Librarian, Batman or other imaginary people.

Lawrence Linehan says...

So back to basics -
Evil igor:
1
The Bucks Record Society has published the 1798 Muster Roll for the County of Bucks – this is a list of able bodied males in the county between the ages of 15 and 60 capable of acting in a military capacity. The names are listed by parish and occupation within it. Can you tell us which page and which parish shows the existence of Biguns as I am unable to find them?

2
Tell us about your 'purity' - not just more vague adjectives like 'decency'.

Lawrence Linehan says...

Do other men possess this 'purity' and 'decency', or is it a uniquely igorian quality, with other veterans of the 1970's being impure and indecent in comparison?

no, we have freedom of speech - you can say whatever you like pretty much... what you have to accept though is that incitement of hatred of a group based on specific prejudice of that group is at the very least frowned upon, and is occasionally punishable accordingly - again, this isn't a bad thing, it means that whoever you are, and wherever you are in this country, you can expect to be treated decently (obviously this is still a work in progress, there are still bigoted nuts out there who make life a misery for those they choose to oppress)

pray tell which minority group were you hoping to pick on today?

no... 'touché' would only have made sense if it were wycombe wonderer responding, however it would make no sense for a third party such as myself to say it. a third party (eg a spectator) would also not say touché during a fencing duel

checkmate on the other hand could be called by a (n annoying) spectator of a chess game, possibly to rile the loser - that was essentially the role I was playing

First off, I've seen you pick on minorities in your blogs (disregard for the disabled seems the obvious one to cite) so don't act 'holier than thou'

Secondly, if you want to use the word 'milkman', do so... nobody in the world is going to complain, and I dare say most of the silly stories you hear like that are made up

The one place you might find a bit more concern over otherwise innocuous words would be schools, but that's to try and instil a sense of equality in children from a young age, lest they grow up to be bigoted themselves

Seriously... its a very good ethos to teach

Ah, the museum and the issue of access.
~
Well, on that subject I think the building should be fully accessible for disabled people to enjoy and there must be a way of making the current structure suitable. If it needs a lift for access to the higher levels then by all means install a lift, if it can't go inside the building then build an extension on the outside of the building to house the lift. So long as the materials the new extension is constructed with blend in then all will be well.

Now you understand my stance on access to the museum please tell me what it wrong?

For anyone reading this that doesn't know the history, Ivor is lying. What he actually said, before he changed his blog, was, in a less than round about way, why bother with disabled access when disabled people probably wouldn't want to visit the museum anyway. It is nothing to do with being inarticulate, it is to do with bigoted discrimination. And that is before considering the very worrying portrayal of Ivor's attitude towards women and little girls.

It is why quite a number of us chose to stop commenting on here, and I am only here now to correct the deliberate misrepresentation of what was said.

Hello Lawrence. I did wonder if that was you on Facebook. There's only one Lawrence Linehan and it looks like he has only one friend. Surely it's got to be you?

I only checked because I'd noticed you're on the computer the whole time and I wanted to make sure I wasn't dealing with a child. Your repetitively themed responses are quite juvenile, aren't they? Surely a grown up wouldn't get angry about other people's typos?

Anyway, I can be your facebook friend Lawrence. Perhaps we can meet in Wycombe for a cup of tea and chat about why you're so angry? I'm guessing you were bullied at school. Did they pick on you, Lawrence? Did they steal your lunch and call you funny names? Did they? Is that why you attack people on the internet, to make yourself feel better?

OK, I'm just teasing. Let's meet in the Eden Centre, outside Clintons Cards. I'm guessing you can make it any day - unfortunately I have to work Mon-Fri so how about this Saturday? Wear something cheerful.

In the mean time, see if you can muster up the courage to write something nice on here. Come on, you can do it - deep breath...

Wycombe Whatever has it taken you three days to think of something to write half full of stupid clichés like this? I don’t spend as much time as you imagine in front of computers. You shouldn’t judge people by your own standards– I don’t know what you do but I don’t gawp and snigger though I KNOW I have caused a few smiles at the expense of idiots like you and igor and pointed out obvious dishonesty rather than ‘casting sanctimonious misery’ (what does that phrase MEAN - do YOU know or did you just think that it was a bit rude and contained a half-remembered long word so you’d call me that?). On New Year’s Eve I was singing with friends at Trafalgar Square – we were too late to make it to the Embankment which is the place to be these days. I didn’t get to bed until 5 a.m. – that’s why I was posting then. My films of the fireworks are on my Facebook page. I have grave doubts about your own personal hygiene (and maturity) judging from the inaccurate assumptions you make about mine and calling people smelly is a bit of a little girl’s insult – when did you last put your knickers and vest in the wash – or have you graduated to a Maidenform bra these days? It IS a good world out there and I like myself VERY much. Why don’t YOU stop hating yourself - and for God’s sake stop trying to sound cleverer and funnier than you are?

Dear Wycombe Whatever - I’m afraid that like your chum igor you’re a bit careless about the truth.
‘There's only one Lawrence Linehan and it looks like he has only one friend. Surely it's got to be you?’ Both statements are wrong (I’ve found two or more) and you obviously got the wrong person – my Facebook page is only open to a small number of people (in case INFANTILE people access it – seems to have worked - hint hint!) – why don’t you tell us about YOUR Facebook page? (Do you HAVE anything worth sharing with other people on such a page?)
For a supposedly well-adjusted grown up, you sound an angry and condescending mocker yourself. I DO like posting on here but I’m off the computer a lot of the time and what do you mean by ‘repetitively-them
ed’ – each comment I make is different about a different topic – or is ‘repetitively-them
ed’ another long-word phrase you’re impressed with (like ‘casting sanctimonious misery’ – what DID that mean)? I’m not ‘angry’ about poor spelling and grammar – I just think such slovenliness and ignorance shows a lazy and ignorant approach to the subject being discussed on the part of the people talking about it. You and igor should remember what Cobbett said "When once comes forward as a candidate for public admiration, esteem or compassion for his opinions, his principles, his motives, every act of his life, public or private, becomes the fair subject of public discussion." This includes juvenile spelling and grammatical errors. On the subject of juvenility you seem to spend a lot of time speculating about my childhood and surely a grown-up would not make mocking remarks about someone else sitting in their underwear (I notice you didn’t tell us about your Maidenform bra!). I wasn’t bullied at school – though I’m guessing that if you’re male then you are a youngish former school bully trying to regain his glory days as a 17 year old gang leader. Why don’t you tell us something about your own childhood?
Thank you for your offer of Facebook companionship and a cup of tea but, like everyone, I meet enough people I find boring already in everyday life, without cultivating another one – why don’t you have a nice cup of tea with igor instead?
So there – now YOU write something nice without any dodgy grand-sounding phrases - tell us about your Facebook page, your sex and age and your childhood.
There - was THAT nice enough? (I enjoyed writing it!)

Who would use such words? I suppose someone who did resort to that sort of language would probably also not polish their shoes every day or fail to dress for dinner in the evening....

Ivor,

If you truly "never intended to cause offence", then why do you consistently tell lies in your blogs? Why do you constantly fabricate wild stories about both your home life, and events? Why do you then not answer truthfully the challenges put before you? Why do you insist on treating the readership of the BFP as idiotic, retarded imbeciles?

This is why you are a figure of hatred, and garner the responses to your blogs of trite.

So, if you truly "never intended to cause offence”, isn’t it about time you owned-up to, and apologise for, fabricating the majority of these blogs?

Speaking as a retired police horse (see: http://www.bucksfree

of_crime_fighting/) I would like to say that I do not find Lawrence Linehan’s comments about blind horses at all disrespectful to other horses who happen to have lost their eyesight. I also wish to express my agreement with the robust commonsense contained in the comments of Mr Linehan and my disagreement with the absurdity of igor the Evil Blogmaster’s comments about blind horses and so-called ‘political correctness’. I would also thank Mr Linehan for his helpful suggestion, elsewhere on this site, that I write my memoirs in a similar fashion to the late Eliot Ness, who though he was not a horse and was American is a good example to consider. Once again thank you Mr Linehan.
