Make sure you are politically correct

By ivor »

I'm sure everyone is aware of the term “politically correct” which was coined in the 1980's.

Only yesterday the issue of being “PC” came up on the comments left on my last blog.

Let me make this clear, I am the last person who would intentionally look to cause trouble by saying something to offend someone however in today’s society the politically correct police are everywhere just waiting to pounce if you should mistakenly or inadvertently say the slightest thing that could be deemed offensive.

Surely the whole concept of being PC is now out of control?

Even if you refer to the person who delivers the mail as a postman you can be in trouble.

As it happens, a man does deliver my mail so my use of the word postman is correct. If a lady did the job then I would refer to them as a post lady.

Sadly the generic term “post person” has entered the language for us to use to avoid calling a lady a postman by mistake.

Only the other day I was reading an article on the web site of a national news paper (see link below) about a Council who put up signs on pedestrian crossings saying “Only cross with green figure” rather than saying “with green man”.

Recently the pedestrian crossings in Wycombe were renewed and they still have a figure of a man on them (see picture accompanying this blog).

According to some the use of a man on our new pedestrian crossings is not PC so surely the powers that be should spring into action and put up notices on all the new crossings in Wycombe?

Over the years the national press has reported stories about the madness of political correctness indeed one was about a school who renamed the nursery rhyme “Baa baa black sheep” to “Baa baa rainbow sheep”.

This renaming of the well know nursery rhyme was widely reported. In actual fact the story was a hoax however due to some of the daft things brought in under the guise of PC people believed it.

Back in the 1970's being PC was unheard of but nowadays the concept has spawned a whole new culture with some employers creating special jobs such as Equality Officers and Diversity Leaders just to make sure their organisations comply with the rules of being PC.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for people being equal and for encouraging diversity but now people are living in fear of saying something wrong and they are actually being pulled up if they step out of line just once.

Even in some of our schools the children are being taught to behave in a PC manner rather than using words and phrases spoken by the general population.

I fear the whole concept is getting out of control and its costing the employers millions having to employ people to make sure they comply with the undefined rules of being PC.

As far as I am concerned I shall stick to the old terms, my mail is delivered by a postman, the milk is delivered by the milkman and schoolchildren have their meals served by a dinner lady.

What do you think?

The following statements in igor’s blog are clearly at variance with anybody’s experience of daily life outside bigunland;

‘… in today’s society the politically correct police are everywhere just waiting to pounce’.
‘… if you refer to the person who delivers the mail as a postman you can be in trouble’.
‘Sadly the generic term “post person” has entered the language for us to use to avoid calling a lady a postman by mistake’.
‘… people are living in fear of saying something wrong and they are actually being pulled up if they step out of line just once’.
‘…its (sic) costing the employers millions having to employ people to make sure they comply with the undefined rules of being PC’.

Yes it is a fabrication of journalists or more to the point people who can not be bothered to research the details.

If you look at the council in questions leaflet regarding crossings they call it a green man, however on their toucan crossings it is a man with a bike, and on their pegasus crossings it is a rider on a horse.

By having a sign which says "green figure crossing" they can use the same plated instructions on all three crossing types (possibly saving the tax payer money).

Ivor,

If you truly "never intended to cause offence", then why do you consistently tell lies in your blogs? Why do you constantly fabricate wild stories about both your home life, and events? Why do you then not answer truthfully the challenges put before you? Why do you insist on treating the readership of the BFP as idiotic, retarded imbeciles?

This is why you are a figure of hatred, and garner the negative responses to your blogs of trite.

So, if you truly "never intended to cause offence”, isn’t it about time you owned-up to, and apologise for, fabricating the majority of these blogs?

I have never heard of commercial or public organisations with departments actually ‘devoted to diversity and equal opportunity – most companies have a personnel department which will advise on people following the law in regard to treatment of people in their organisations – or do you think we should have a return to the days of signs saying ‘No Blacks or Jews need apply? ’

If you think about it this is an unusually dishonest piece of rubbish, based as it all is on a lie - ‘Only yesterday the issue of being “PC” came up on the comments left on my last blog.’
It didn’t ‘come up’ nor was it ‘left’ – it was unnaturally forced in by igor the Bloghamster when he made the senseless comment to me,
‘I am afraid your comment was not politically correct, making fun about blind horses is not very funny these days. What about deaf horses?’
Nobody has mentioned PC until then (horse lovers – how many of you think my comment showed disrespect to horses?) – if you search the same page for the word ‘correct’ Windows finds the word used 53 times, some in quotes, or multiple postings of the same comment, but 21 of them are in posts from igor. This wasn’t a genuine 'issue' that ‘came up’ spontaneously – this was a load of obsessional dross you forced in as an issue. How long has this fearlessly commonsense load of rubbish been written?

A Modern Day Dilemma
(Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.)
.
Once upon a time there was a handsome, intelligent young man called Lawrence. He was very articulate and able to converse on a wide range of subjects. However, after he became redundant he became a little bored. Despite volunteering for good works and helping out local charities he yearned for good company and lively conversation.
.
One day he decided to visit a local pub to meet up with his old mates Albert and Roger. His only problem was choosing which one to go to.
.
One was called the Banter House and they could always rely on bumping into someone friendly and sociable there who would be up for an interesting chat.
.
The other was called the Bigun Arms. However, there was hardly ever anyone in there, apart from the fat bloke who was always propping up the bar. This bloke wasn’t clever and attractive like Lawrence, nor was he so articulate. He was a bit unsavoury and was always holding forth with a stream of tall stories which all the locals had heard many times before. Few people believed a word he said and many gave him a wide berth.
.
So. What do YOU think happened next? Did Lawrence (and his mates) go to the Banter House, where they were welcomed with open arms and made lots of new friends? Did he live happily ever after? Or did he go to the Bigun Arms, where he couldn’t avoid the fat bloke? Did he keep returning day after day to hear the same old stories, asking the same old questions and repeating the same old arguments, so that he became an even bigger bore than the one he despised?
.
Let us hear YOUR point of view.

I have never heard of a ‘diversity officer’ in a company – I say again see the comments above about PERSONNEL officers. ‘Diversity officers ’ are not needed and so do not exist.

I have always managed to cross the road without being confused by illuminated men, bikes and horses and a quick straw poll here at the Diversity Arms amongst the patrons, human and equine, has produced an identical response on the part of all respondents.

The whole PC thing is almost entirely created by persons from the public sector (pen pushers/peanut counters) and the media (s*#t stirrers) as an opportunity to justify their jobs and positions. Most ordinary hard working folks do not really give a damm whether you call a dinner lady a dinner person or not.

Mama36 - did you really THINK before your wrote that? Do you really want the return of a character which was invented in a time of overt racism and which represented a demeaning image of black people as being thieves and incompetants??

Don't believe it?

Read then "The Three Golliwogs" by Enid Blyton in which the author refers to her characters as follows "...So off went Woogie and ****, arm-in-arm, singing merrily their favourite song which, as you may guess, was Ten Little **** Boys".

Quick History Lesson: "Ten Little ****" is the name of a childrens' poem which celebrated the deaths of ten black children, one-by-one.

Come on now, Mama36. Don't you agree that it's better to bring our children into a politically correct world free of this nonsense than to cling onto old traditions which unwittingly cause offense to so many?

Just because someone write a story about something it does not mean that everything to do with anything related to it must be banished from society. You can not re-write history indeed that is one of the failings of political correctness....

Your non building blogs may be based along very thin references to some form of reality, but they contain mostly fictional places, fictional people, and fictional events.

By trying to palm these off as truth, you fall into the realms of being a liar, which has been proven many times, by many different people.

Ivor, if you cannot see why golliwogs are offensive to Black people then you really are a bit dense. It may have been part of our culture, but for a lot of people it's a part of our history that we would prefer to put behind us. It belongs with such offensive 'comedy' as that lovely piece of British comedy 'love Thy neighbour'', remember that? Where it was thought to be hilarious to call black people 'Sambo'
Some things are 'of their time' and should be consigned to history.
I'm afraid your views belong to a past era.

You may find it hard to believe, Ivor, as people who think Love Thy Neighbour, Jim Davidson and Bernard Manning were just a bit of light-hearted fun but black people find golliwogs offensive.
Now if someone finds something offensive are you sensitive to their feelings or do you demand they put up with it because YOU are not offended. If I decided to refer to all women as b****es, should I be allowed to even if it offends? Or are the people who ask me to stop being PC?

What does that MEAN?

Dr John Dinosaur says...
11:55pm Mon 9 Jan 12

Some words change their meaning – ‘bloody’, ‘s*h*i*t’ and ‘plonker’ used to be beyond the pale when I was a child, whereas ‘S*a*m*b*o’ and ‘N*i*g*g*e*r’ were regarded as inoffensive. There was a colour ‘N*i*g*g*e*r Brown’ in paint catalogues and this word was commonly used as a name for black or brown animals, particularly dogs. The landlord of a local pub round here used to have black or brown Labrador dogs and he used (over forty years ago) to call them N*i*g*g*e*r. One of the labbys died and he proposed calling this dog’s successor by the same name and his family and customers started to say, in an impassioned manner to him, things like ‘For God’s sake Eric! You can’t CALL a dog by that name any more – what will BLACK customers think if you start calling that out in front of them?’ I am sure this man was not a racist in his views and he and his wife welcomed black people into their pub - but he was almost at retirement age in the 1970’s, and very slow to change his views and behaviour, and he used to say ‘what do you mean – what will they say? This is the third dog I’ve had called by that name’ and I think he said his father had owned a dog with the same name. Eventually his family had a brainwave and his beloved granddaughter (probably a grandmother herself by now) earnestly explained things to Eric and asked him to give the dog another name when it arrived. Eric had a think and - of all things - decided to call the new dog S*a*m*b*o. It was decided to stop trying to change Eric’s mind a second time but there was a conspiracy and everyone called the dog ‘Sam’ or sometimes ‘Samuel’ and before his retirement Eric gradually started to call the dog Sam though he looked a bit strange when it was called ‘Samuel’.

Dr John Dinosaur says...
12:00am Tue 10 Jan 12

(PS I am sure it is right and suitable that names like this should no longer be acceptable in our society.) Some of you may remember the publican and know I changed his name to Eric.
