Wycombe from A-Z: L is for London Road

London Road looking towards Wycombe town centre. London Road looking towards Wycombe town centre.

After struggling to find something in Wycombe to match the letter 'L' the best yours truly could come up with 'London Road'.

Linking Wycombe with the nearby town of Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross, Denham and onto the capital London Road is very important to Wycombe indeed over the years is has been one of the major transport arteries that has helped our town to become what it is today.

The road was so busy that at one time the stretch from Denham to Wycombe was home to no less than five toll houses or turnpikes. The turnpikes on the London Road were first erected from 1719 onwards.

Wycombe's toll house on the London road survived in various forms until 1978 when it was dismantled and moved to the Chiltern Open Air Museum at Chalfont. In 1970 a collision from a car demolished part of the derelict historic structure. (See link below from the Sharing Wycombe's Old Photographs – SWOP – site).

Today London Road forms part of the A40 which is a 256 mile long trunk road stretching from London to Fishguard originally designated in 1923.

The rise of the motor vehicle lead to the construction of the M40 to by pass Wycombe which opened in 1967 however despite the motorway the London Road is still a busy road especially when there is an accident on the motorway.

Until as recently as the late 1960's London Road was nowhere near as wide as it is now.

Around 1967 a road widening programme was instigated to upgrade the carriageway resulting in the demolition of buildings on the southern side including Pann Mill and the associated mill house.

As Wycombe grew houses spring up alongside London Road eventually lining the entire road as far a Loudwater resulting in Loudwater being consumed into the built up suburban area of Wycombe.

The fine Victorian town houses that line the road reflect the status and importance of not only Wycombe but also of the London Road itself.

Today there are several business parks, out of town shops and other commercial premises together with sporting venues such as the Wycombe Cricket Club sited along this prestigious thoroughfare.

In recent years a bus lane was added to the road however confusion as to when the lane in in operation and a lackadaisical attitude to fining anyone who drives in the lane illegally has all but rendered the lane pointless.

What do you think?

Does anyone know of the significance of the buiding on the left when you turn from the London Rd. to go up Rayners Ave. in Loudwater. You would never see brickwork and design in a building nowadays. I can never help to stare at it everytime I pass, better when the lights are at red. Any ideas?

Looking back, maybe this was when Ivor got paranoid that I was after his job and that explains his reaction to the Bucks Freedom Press. So wrong.

Did you shake your head sadly and wisely when you said ‘so wrong’ at the vanity and mistakenness of other people?

How seriously you take your absurd jottings and snappings in the Fem-Dom press – I don’t remember ivor worrying about you taking his job. I remember he objected to you using his blog to publicise your own.

Maybe he also didn’t want to be associated with someone who so untalented who spent so much time calling names at other people (including the editor of this paper – remember Steve the chicken?) and being complimented by other, equally stupid, middle-aged schoolgirls, for her wit and ‘aptness’.

Why is it called the ‘Bucks Freedom Press’ – what is it free FROM – humour – wit - a sense of proportion?

It's funny I had my blood pressure checked recently and it was below average.

I haven’t expressed an opinion about the FemDom blog except for the first one. I recently asked why it was called after freedom and what it was ‘free’ from. I would have thought that someone who anonymously calls other people jackasses chickens and dinosaurs is more of a troll than me - none of my stuff was directed at Margo until she got on my case and ivor has said he has no problems with what I have said about him.

If you dislike me so much then why don’t you and the other mice go to the University library and do some course reading?

Looking back, maybe this was when Ivor got paranoid that I was after his job and that explains his reaction to the Bucks Freedom Press. So wrong.
Gosh the lack of wisdom on the part of some people!

Loudwater is an interesting local placename and not for explanation given in the EPNS Buckinghamshire Place Names entry.

A lot of ivor’s blogs are about fascinating subjects ruined by his ignorance of place names and local history – the London Road is a late 18th century creation (or relocation) and Desborough Road predates the town itself and may even be 2,000 years old – none of this is ever referred to in his blog.

This is to say nothing about errors of fact.

I can be ivor........

Loudwater was once served by the High Wycombe to Bourne End railway line, the station being situated at the bottom of Treadaway Hill. The line and station closed in 1970.

Does anyone else know how to operate copy and paste from Wiki?

Here’s an interesting Loudwater fact. In 1929 Mr and Mrs Pratt of Battersea, London, decided that the sunlessness of their dwelling would no longer do. They moved, after much insistence from Mrs Pratt, to a new housing development in Loudwater, a four-bedroomed house called Hillcrest with a live-in maid and a gardener. They brought with them their son, Denis, who wasn’t doing much else at the time. Denis would wait for his father’s return from the city at Loudwater station, gazing up the line and dreaming of bigger things. Denis would grow up to be Quentin Crisp, and come to describe High Wycombe as dreary.

I wonder if Mr Crisp ever met a Bigun during his time here?

Ah, remember him well, loved his take on dust, although I have never waited long enough to see if his theory worked. I'm sure he came across a few Biguns in his time. I also expect he came across some Jackasses when he lived in Loudwater. What about you Edna, we know you have come across a Bigun(or was it the Bigun that came across you) what about Jackasses, please tell.

Incidentally Lorraine, and I know it’s gauche to speak of such things here what with the current climate, but my new series for the Freedom Press (Fem-dom press, genius!) is called ‘Fifty Shades of Beige’ and goes back many, many years to when Ivor and I were very young and saucy. Currently in development, I am jotting it down on trains and it's making me and fellow over-the-shoulder readers very flustered.

You are far too obvious to ever be accused of trolling. Anyone who gets wound up by your posts needs to take a long look at themselves in a mirror.

I can't see why so many rude girls regard themselves as victims of trolls - trolls are people who insult other people online anonymously - like yourself and the fem dom bloggers calling people animal names. Posting 'SEX!' on a blog to ‘besmirch’ it is hardly trolling and you have accused me of ignorance without answering my question what YOU know. You have complained in the past that my posting has prevented you from getting a word - now I am trolling ignorantly.

Oh dear Lawrence.

Trolling has nothing to do with insulting people, that's too obvious, that would mean the troll has lost it's temper and has itself been trolled.

The troll is calm and calculating, the troll never loses it's cool. It waits until this opportune moment to strike with the perfect comment designed to subtly enrage and cause others to spend hours of their time pointlessly arguing with someone who really doesn't care.

The troll is calm and calculating, the troll never loses it's cool. It waits until this opportune moment to strike with the perfect comment designed to subtly enrage and cause others to spend hours of their time pointlessly arguing with someone who really doesn't care.
That's not what I've read - I've read it's all about anonymous rage and name-calling - a bit like you and the dommes who want to silence people like ivor and others on here.

You don't get your latest information on what the cool kids are doing from the BBC by any chance do you?

No, No, WHO is it free from? Can't you work it out? Oh no, I forgot - you haven't read it. Crystal balls, Lawrence?
Thank you for answering on behalf of Brenda. I have asked this question and mocked the name several times but now I realise that all along - oooh - you needed a complete blog to 'free' yourselves of me! A completely censored blog! Thank you - I didn't realise how powerful I was!
You are very welcome! You had been told before you had obviously forgotten. Are you feeling dizzy and lightheaded? Low blood pressure can cause all sorts of problems, including inadequate blood flow to vital organs.
I've never been told that - is inadequate blood flow the problem with your brain?

'Old Bean' where do you get your slang from - P.G. Wodehouse? I ignored the web reference - perhaps you can explain what it says.

Now just answer the question - don't give me web references so I can 'find out for myself' - just answer the question - I asked you to

It's a picture, obviously due to the .jpg format. So it doesn't 'say' anything.

I'll now stop listening to anything you have to say about the internet.

I know quite a lot of things, and trying to write all of it down would take far too much time, sorry old chap.

I find the lack of troll based knowledge on display here disturbing.
Then tell us what YOU know (if anything) - I would have guessed you were too ignorant to be able to comment on the knowledge or lack of it on other people's part.

Here I hope I'm not drowning you out again.
The art of the troll is to wind up a person/persons without them realising that they have been wound up on purpose.

Nobody asked you to come on here and attack me - which one of us needs to look in the mirror?
Oh dear Lawrence.

Trolling has nothing to do with insulting people, that's too obvious, that would mean the troll has lost it's temper and has itself been trolled.

The troll is calm and calculating, the troll never loses it's cool. It waits until this opportune moment to strike with the perfect comment designed to subtly enrage and cause others to spend hours of their time pointlessly arguing with someone who really doesn't care.
