Knock, knock. Who's there?

Last weekend yours truly was just enjoying a game of pocket billiards in my games room when a knock came at the front door.

Even though I was dressed for billiards in a waistcoat, smart shirt and bow tie on this occasion it seemed like a good idea to answer the door.

I may have well not bothered as the caller turned out to be a builder trying to persuade me to have work done to my house.

This was the third cold caller to knock on my door in the past week or so.

When at home the last thing I want is people disturbing me for unnecessary purposes such as trying to sell me things I do not want or need. Cold calling is most annoying and off-putting.

There is the telephone preference service that is supposed to stop the annoying phone calls and the mailing preference service is to stop the dreaded junk mail but what is there to stop the opportunist caller at the door? Not much it seems.

Not only are the callers annoying but thanks to the mad health and safety culture in which we live there is also the danger that one of them could trip up while on my property and end up suing me for damages.

A few days ago there was a news article on a national news site saying that even the dreaded chuggers, so common in the town centre, are now coming around door to door calling on residents in their homes.

I have enough problems avoiding chuggers in the town centre without having them pestering me at home.

Is it any wonder shoppers are deserting our High Street when they are being persistently harassed by chuggers collecting money?

Come to think of it why do the chuggers only operate in the High Street?

If we really have to have them surely they could alternate around the town and occasionally spend time in Frogmoor or even venture into the notorious Desborough Road?

Personally I think the powers that be need to reduce the number of days the chuggers operate in Wycombe and I certainly think they need to ban them from annoying people in their homes.

Some of the chuggers can be quite persistent and its about time they had to be registered with a centrally run governemnt endorsed agency like security guards before going about their business.

A hot line could be set up so people can call to report those individuals who cause harassment and ultimately give them a ban from continuing to operate.

Chuggers and cold doorstep callers are an annoyance and they seem to operate as they feel fit with very little respect to the decent people.

Its about time the balance was redressed.

What do you think?

this seems like a very exciting blog after reading sunita gill's olympic pharmicist exploits. i expect even train spotters and drying paint watchers find her blogs dull beyond belief. i might see if i can host a blog on screws and the wide variety available across the world.
--
the chuggers do get on my nerves though, i would love to just tell them to f off but am too polite. look at your mobile phone as you pass them and glance & say sorry and they leave you alone. or just a firm "not now" seems to work too.

I have a feeling you are being a bit horrible about Sunita Gill who may have been inveigled into this by a BFP hack because of her connection with the Olympics – something unignorably and unbelievably fascinating to the sports enthusiasts on the BFP.

She may have all this stuff ghost-written for her by a BFP hack. Presumably she is an intelligent woman if she is a qualified pharmacist but the ‘narrative’ – going back and forth in time and then three blogs in a few minutes a few days ago - is dull for what it describes – it reminds me a bit of the ‘Thousands cheer Olympic torch’ headlines accompanied by photos of children in small groups. I notice the BFP is not allowing posts on Ms Gill's blogs - possibly to save her embarrassment after persuading her to do the blog against her better judgement.

I think we should give her the benefit of the doubt.

I remember you talking about neatly trimmed bushes a few weeks ago on this blog - I take it by 'screws' you are referring to the items of carpentry hardware used to hang doors on to their hinges.
