My daughter’s school makes World Book Day a big event. Children are invited to dress up as a character from a book they’ve read. Last year she knew in January what she wanted to be. This year, well, we’re struggling.

What are we doing to our children? We’re still under the illusion that the UK is wealthy and offers the best in education and therefore our youngsters should be thriving. They’re not.

On one of the radio stations there’s a menacing ad telling us that offenders can serve time in their community paying back for their crimes. And we, the public, can have a say in how they pay back. How very democratic and forward-thinking.

In case you think I’m going to spout on about love and honesty and all those human qualities which often can’t even be inherited, let alone bought, I’m not. I want to talk about goods which are by nature imperfect regardless of how much money someone has.

Having just begun to surface after Christmas, I’m now aware that Valentine’s Day is upon me. There’s red everywhere. (Though for those not anywhere near a relationship, shops are also displaying Easter goods.) I imagine roses and romantic dinners and proposals on bended knees. As I ponder the cost of this day, I start to wonder what Valentines Day is for.
