Meet Dave Hampton, ‘the carbon coach’, family man, 50 years old, living in Marlow, in a refurbished energy efficient home. He keeps a low ‘footprint’. Dave rowed for Great Britain in 1982, studied engineering at Cambridge and went on to become one of the UK’s most dedicated climate change campaigners, influencing businesses, families and the rich and famous to cut their carbon. Dave often appears on TV and in newspapers, and his work as the carbon coach has attracted much international interest.

10,000 Marlow homes – £50million pounds a year - up in (invisible) smoke?

Posted on 3:07pm Tuesday 30th March 2010

One day the people of Marlow could be £50 million a year richer. Making money too, selling our excess home-grown energy. We could cut our dependency on (and the fortunes we pay annually to) ‘those in power’. This is, of course, controversial, and deeply unpopular with those currently 'in power' - and those who defend them. But our community and consciences would be 500,000 empty oil drums lighter, and 300,000 tons of CO2 cleaner and more respectable.

The Inconvenient Truth about High Energy* Light Bulbs

Posted on 7:50pm Friday 19th February 2010

People often say that it’s stupid to think that the huge global climate crisis we face can be solved by a few people just changing a few light bulbs – and that’s completely true! But it is also true that we will never solve anything, small or large, without starting to make some physical changes in our lives to avoid waste. A fresh positive illuminating experience – a light bulb moment – can be a very good way to start to turn old-fashioned wasteful habits upside down. We won’t ‘save the world’ by changing a few lightbulbs. Neither will we save it without doing so!

Making carbon history... simple...and personal

Posted on 6:32pm Thursday 10th December 2009

I was born 50 years ago, in 1959. In that year CO2 was just 315ppm. By 1970, just as I stopped wearing short trousers to school, a few brave, outspoken, prescient scientists started warning that CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuel were causing dangerous global warming. By then CO2 was 325 ppm and rising. Today CO2 is 388ppm and still rising.

Carbon Denial : The Smoking Gun

Posted on 8:05pm Thursday 3rd December 2009

The facts around carbon and climate are remarkably simple. The science really was settled decades ago. Settled, that is, were it not for a skilful army of deniers and obfuscators – professional, voluntary and some accidental – screaming that CO2 is innocent, good for us even. I don’t think so.

Less time climate debating, more time insulating

Posted on 4:11pm Friday 27th November 2009

Readers might be surprised to hear that EVERYONE now seems to AGREE that it is wise to conserve fossil fuel, reduce waste, avoid pollution and adopt greener lifestyle habits. Simples! Even the doubters proclaim that they live “some of the greenest lifestyles in town.” This is cause for celebration. Because now everyone is agreed, we can get to work on the task in hand, and take simple steps to kick the dirty fossil habit.

The Marlow Carbon Cycle Ride n Park celebration

Posted on 7:33pm Monday 26th October 2009

Well my opinion -and I’m the lucky one writing this blog- is that Saturday’s Marlow Carbon Cycle Ride n Park was a big community success - all round. Some 175 amazing people took part, despite rain, despite half term, despite football etc. We welcomed a few intrepid elderly, many brave youngsters, and some very young! I salute everyone who cycled. For some it wasn’t easy. We got a lot of brave people that day, some maybe braving their own personal demons. And some cool dudes just coming along for the ride!

Today, October 2nd, is Gandhi's birthday. It is also National Carbon Footprint Day!

Posted on 3:52pm Friday 2nd October 2009

I’ve just taken advantage of a good free service, and I warmly recommend you do the same. Use the National Carbon Fooprint Day website to record information about where you were – energy bill wise - in 2009. Who knows, in 2012 Bucks households may look back with pride and satisfaction, at how much carbon weight we have lost, how much less fossil fuel we are wasting, and how much money we have saved ourselves on all the various energy bills. Good news surely.
