The buildings of Wycombe: 13 Queens Square

By ivor »

All too often people are unaware of the history of the buildings that fill our town centre.

Take this weeks building, located at 13 Queens Square everyone today knows it as a shop which they will probably visit at lunchtime however it was once a private dwelling house with a very famous occupant.

Located close to the old Medieval area of Wycombe town centre and just a stones throw away from Frogmoor this building, when constructed, was right in the heart of the town centre.

I'm not sure of the exact age of the building but it must date from the 18th Century and even all those years ago was most impressive.

Just look at the large central sash window with magnificent moulding above to set it off. You would never find such magnificent architectural embellishments on a modern building.

It may have only a short frontage indeed it seems almost out of proportion with the surrounding properties but what it lacks in size this building make up in grandeur.

Back in the 1750's it was home to a master lace maker by the name of John Ball and his four children. In 1759 his sister Hannah move in to look after her brother.

Although Hannah was born in Naphill she was destined to become one of Wycombe's most famous residents.

On day in 1765 she went to nearby Frogmoor to listen to the preacher John Wesley who was addressing the crowds at 5am in the morning. She became good friends with John Wesley and he encouraged her to set up the first ever Sunday School at her home.

This was of course the start of the Sunday School movement which went on become a worldwide phenomenon all of which was started at 13 Queens Square.

Hannah's achievements are commemorated by a plaque located on the front of the building. The wording on the plaque reads “Founder of the Sunday Schools Hannah Ball lived here from 1759-1766”.

In 1971 the Hannah Ball School in Phillip Road, Totteridge was opened in her honour.

Although there is a plaque the building is not afforded any listed protection by English Heritage whatsoever.

The building may now be a shop and the original windows and doors on the ground floor have been altered from the original however surely the building needs to be protected for future generations to enjoy?

Even Pevsner passed by without mentioning it in his guide book.

Sadly a large street lamp has been fixed to the front of the building, see photograph, completely ruining the clean cut architectural line of this magnificent structure.

There is also a litter bin plonked outside which adds nothing to the vista. Oh well....

So Mr. Fictional Bigun, just when are you going to admit that there is no such thing as a family by the name of Bigun.

Don't you think we are lucky to have such wonderful architecture in our town centre?

As demonstrated in this blog Wycombe has also been at the forefront of new developments, in the form of the Sunday School, which spread all around the world.

What became of your library search for your family name in the muster role Ivor?

What excuse are you going to create for the lack of any reference to a Bigun family in that historical book?

What became of my search in the library? Well, I visited the library and had trouble finding the document however Lawrence has now given me the number of the book on the shelves so I can return and find it easily. However Lawrence claims to be taking a rest from my blog so I am wondering if there is such urgency associated with this now?

I don't think pictures exist of how this building originally looked.
~
If historical pictures do exist then I always try to give a link to a site where the picture exists, due to copyright restrictions I am unable to put certain pictures directly onto the actual blog itself.

Thank you for that comment however this blog is not about the cuisine currently on offer at the building in question.
~
Being someone who enjoys eating myself I did consider doing a series of reviews of food on offer in the town however I am now on a diet so that idea has been put to one side. I'm sure the restaurateurs of Wycombe would be pleased to have me turn up and start eating then write a blog about my experiences, I fear that I would also fall foul of the libel laws if I were to write an uncomplimentary blog....

As long as you keep telling lies about yourself, then you won't fall foul of libel laws.

However, when you tell lies about others........

Great blog Ivor. I knew that Hannah Ball started Sunday Schools here but I had never seen the plaque until, quite by chance, I spotted it in the early hours of Saturday morning when I and a team were out doing Street Angels and I told them who she was and what she'd done, and now I've found your blog on the subject. We have an amazing heritage in High Wycombe and should be proud of our town

Indeed there are many things to be proud of in Wycombe and the Sunday Schools movement started by Hanna Ball is one of them, who would have thought that a world changing idea first started in that innocuous house in Queens Square....

Oh, and well done to you for being a Street Angel, I do hope that last Saturday was quiet and peaceful on the streets of Wycombe?

With the state of the pavements in Wycombe you are likely to fall over even if you have your eyes on the ground!

There is no point in suing me as yours truly really is as poor as a church mouse so you are unlikely to get and financial recompense....

Well now, the words may be all correct but the meaning is a little bit off if you read it in a certain way. What else would you expect from Ivor Bigun?

Lawrence Linehan says...

Arguing with igor is a sort of shaming, onanistic pleasure, and I should refrain from it, but anyway – this article of igor’s shows the diligent, tough, practical nature of igor’s research methods.

In it he says, ‘I'm not sure of the exact age of the building but it must date from the 18th Century …’ In fact if you look up the SWOP pages of High Wycombe Library (SWOP reference, RHW : 34003) you will see that the building on this site was not there in 1900. I took a photo from the same spot as the 1900 photographer this evening and Greggs and numbers 11 to 13 (the YMCA shop) appear to be either one building, subdivided or a group of neo-Georgian buildings contemporary with each other. They all use brick, and sliding sash windows, similar to the neo-Georgian architecture of the early 1930’s buildings in: Crendon Street, the Royal Mail building in Queen Victoria Road and round the corner into Easton Street, the Municipal Offices opposite the former library, and the former library itself. All these buildings date from the first half of the 1930’s (this was well-recorded at the time and there are date plaques on all of them including the last part of the Crendon Street and adjacent reconstruction on the last part to be built, on the corner of Easton Street). Numbers 11 to 13 Queen Square are also similar to the upper stories of the buildings in Frogmoor adjoining, and to the north of, the former Hearn’s shoe shop on the west side of Frogmoor, including KFC. I am not sure whether this can be proven but I would guess Greggs is probably a neo-Georgian building from the 1930’s possibly replacing the building Hannah Ball was familiar with and like numbers 11 and 12 Queens Square it may be the work of R.G. Brocklehurst the local architect who designed the old library and part designed the Municipal Offices.
