Making History at Beaconsfield RFC
4:06pm Thursday 5th April 2012 in Your Say By Jonathan Hughes
Last Saturday 1st April 2012 will not only go down in the record books at Beaconsfield RFC as the day that the 1XV climbed out of the Southern Counties North division for the first time, but it will also be remembered for a day (and night for some of us!) of huge celebrations at the club!
Anyone watching our game at the weekend will have no doubt been left a little disappointed by the spectacle. Handling errors, a messy breakdown and poor decisions plagued a game that in principle was going to be the 'icing on the cake' of an outstanding season for us. In reality it was very different, and credit must really go to Wallingford for doing there best to spoil the day for us. For a good 40 minutes the neutral would have been hard pressed to know which of the teams were fighting relegation or battling for promotion, if unaware beforehand.
It was a weird situation before the game as we were pretty much all but promoted, but mathematically we still needed 1 point from our two games to guarantee this. Surprisingly although we were totally focussed on the game in hand there was a notable sense of nervousness in the dressing room and to be honest this was reflected in the way we played, particularly in the first half. It was a little strange and with no disrespect intended to Wallingford we had had bigger games this season and had not nearly shown the same nerves.
Anyways I'm not sure anyone can argue that we didn't deserve the title and more importantly we have achieved the goal set out by our coach Greener when he came in two summers ago. When he and Simon Edwards arrived at the club there was a two year plan put in place..first season to lay the foundations and second season to win the league - in simple terms.. mission accomplished!
Here's to next season...hopefully not only will we keep hold of these two quality coaches but the team will stick together and a few more players will come on board - we aren't going up to make up the numbers and a few things may have to develop to make this happen!
