Could I become a millionaire or is this nuts?

Every now and then something happens that is so exciting, it has to be shared.

I have received a letter from Yang Wan, the Chief Auditor of SLR Financial Management Ltd in Hong Kong’. Apparently someone, who may or may not be a relative of mine, by the name of KP Baker, died intestate in 1999, leaving an estate of fifteen and a half million dollars.

Mr Wan thinks he can nudge a third of this significant sum in my direction on the sole basis of our shared surname.

I was a little suspicious at first and was concerned because he didn’t specify what will happen to the other two thirds, but the letter assures me that it is all perfectly legal – thank goodness.

All I have to do is supply the appropriate formal documentation confirming my name, bank details, credit cards etc and within 14 days all the money will be mine. What about that?

If all goes to plan, two weeks from now I’ll be splashing out on a coffee in one of those flash, £3 a cup, coffee shops in Wycombe.

Apparently, I can only conduct the transaction via fax; and correctly assuming I do not have one, he urges me to go out and buy a fax, so he can better explain to me the ‘modalities of his proposition’.

There isn’t a lot of acting work about at the moment, so I have replied to Mr Wan, asking him to send me a small advance, so I can purchase a really good fax machine – I don’t want to get a substandard one for such an important transaction, do I?

Or better still, he might consider sending me a plane ticket, so I can go to Hong Kong and meet up with him to sort this out together, face to face. He hasn’t replied yet.

Interestingly, on checking the Internet about Mr Wan, I notice that he is also helping a Mrs Akram to claim a very similar (in fact precisely similar) amount from the estate of a deceased gentleman by the name of KP Akram – who amazingly also died in 1999 in Hong Kong.

Not a good year for millionaires with the initials KP.

I wonder if they made their fortunes from K P Nuts?
