So the Highways Agency claimed to have improved Handy Cross, but I have to ask – for whom? I think it’s worse than before.

The two problems are firstly that the green phase of traffic lights coming out of Marlow Bottom and the lights that cut through the centre of the roundabout onto the London bound M40 are far too short.

This only allows a few cars out at a time and causes much frustration. More importantly, an increasing number of drivers are simply jumping the red lights on a daily basis.

Secondly, trying to exit on to the Marlow Bottom turning is still difficult because lazy people sit in the middle lane (marked straight ahead – A404 only) and then cut sharply right across at the last minute to exit.

This has caused accidents and many near misses, but the HA don’t seem to care – I have complained to them before.

The layout of the lanes and the markings is poor. If I remember correctly, about 20 years ago the lanes on Handy Cross were different, they moved outwards in a spiral. This was not only more logical, but cut the number of accidents and daily near misses. Why not go back to that layout?

Finally, why do the traffic lights operate 24/7 on this, or any other roundabout in the country? It’s complete nonsense to sit at one red light after another at 3 in the morning. They should operate from 6am to 9pm and then be switched off. — Chris Burmajster, Andrews Way, Marlow Bottom
