Well done, Chris Burmajster, for his perceptive comments on the chaos which is the Handy Cross traffic system (Letters, July 25). I use the ‘roundabout’ on most days and can bear witness to the many near-misses and road-rage incidents which are commonplace. Last year, I was hit by a car driven by a woman who was new to the system and who was totally confused as to what lane she should be in.

I, too, have complained to the Highways Agency, who just respond with ‘no budget’ rhetoric. But we are not asking for major changes but simply much clearer signage, both on the gantries and on the road surface. Current signage is confusing and scarcely readable. Better signage would give the lane-changing bullies no excuses and might avoid a major accident which could be just a matter of time if there are no changes.

The HA could surely repeat the excellent job that has been done on the new M4/A33 junction at Reading, which is complex but brilliantly signed and easy to navigate.

Meanwhile Handy Cross is simply an accident waiting to happen. — John Grafham, Cressex Road, High Wycombe
