In reply to your anonymous correspondent regarding Slate Meadow (BFP, August 22), I assume they’ve never seen the frequent flooding at the southwest end of Brookbank across the River Wye from Slate Meadow after heavy rain as the drains can’t cope, nor experienced the dubious pleasure of being “whooshed” there in a best suit; I should have worn the suit I got for my birthday – it dries quicker.
I agree, our grandchildren need starter homes to buy, not four-bed mansions nor empty offices (10 years plus in Bourne End for the latter). Plenty of Brownfield sites are, and have been, available for affordable houses in Wycombe District.
The infrastructure is not coping. The roads are clogged. Forty years or so ago most households had just one car. Now there are usually two.
The schools are full up. Forty years or so ago, children in our area were guaranteed a place at their nearest infant or junior schools. Not now.
More houses will also mean longer hospital waiting times. Wycombe Hospital’s A&E has closed so I had to go to Wexham Park Hospital for a mouth full of embroidery when I tripped over my running shoelace. Wonderful NHS staff; there should just be more of them, and nearer. I could go on but it’s time for my daily run (shuffle) through our green and pleasant land, while there’s still some of it left. — Geoff Britt, by email
