People often ask me: “What is UKIP’s policy on this? What is your policy on that? How do you feel about this issue?” I often reply that I have only got two main policies really regarding national issues: 1) I do not want an independent Scotland, to keep the United Kingdom intact.

2) I would like to see the UK’s exit from the European Union, seeking an amicable divorce, and replace it with a genuine free trade agreement which is what we thought we had signed up for in the first place.

So I was absolutely delighted when thankfully the Scottish people rejected independence and want to stay together.

I believe it is much better being united, working together. I think it would have been a disaster for England and the rest of the UK and Scotland in particular.

I once had the privilege to talk to Alex Salmond some time ago in the House of Commons. We talked for about 15 minutes. He did not persuade me to change my view and unfortunately and obviously, I did not change his mind either!

We have been together for over 360 years, with enormous benefits for everybody.

If Scotland was an independent and neutral country in 1939 we would have not been able to keep Hitler at bay, we would have been invaded long before the USA got involved. So I believe without Scotland being in the United Kingdom the world would be a different place.

I think the Scottish referendum highlighted two important issues: 1) It showed that people were very concerned regarding this issue, with an incredibly high turnout, which was quite remarkable.

2) I believe this was a great step forward for democracy, Thankfully now this is all behind us people in Scotland and the rest of the UK can unite and build an even better United Kingdom, with more democracy for Northern Island, Wales and England as well.

I do not think we need an English parliament, not another layer of government and certainly not another building. Mr Cameron stated this referendum has shown a great deal for democracy. Well, I say to Mr Cameron, let’s show a wee bit more and have another referendum, this time regarding the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union. — Cllr Brian Pearce, Booker and Cressex, WDC
