Somewhat curious, from his previous letters, as to Dave Hampton’s engineering discipline his letter on October 3, Free Press letters, seems to indicate that it might well be ‘social’, ‘political’ or ‘traffic’.

Professions that need to add ‘engineering’ or ‘science’ to their titles in an attempt to give some semblance of credibility to professions founded on myths.

Evidenced by the simple fact that their attempted solutions never achieve their stated objective, the same problems have existed for decades or centuries and, more often than not their solutions exacerbate the problems they attempt to solve.

For this they have even invented a new law – The Law of Unintended Consequences.

Note (Ref, Kathy Millar’s excellent ‘opinion’ column, same BFP issue.) ‘Unintended’ not ‘unexpected’. Nevertheless they all seem to live extremely well, as illusionists tend to do, whether it’s by bending spoons or getting selected for the Palace of Westminster.

Perhaps the engineers of today to whom Dave refers have realised where the money is to be made. People ought to be very wary of where they put their trust for the supply of their life support systems and what the illusionists state on their metaphorical tins. – PD Somerville, Coningsby Road, High Wycombe
