WE are replying to the interesting letter from the Beaconsfield councillor that suggested a town council in High Wycombe might not enjoy the non-political benefits suggested by a Downley parish councillor the previous week.
While not disagreeing at all with the experience of the Beaconsfield councillor, we would contend that matters may be a little different in High Wycombe.
Why might you ask is that? The make-up of leafy Bucks and Berks and the high income areas in the district account for an overwhelmingly Tory and politically-biased situation.
In High Wycombe town this will present a different outcome.
There is a much greater mix of political views in the town of High Wycombe and a number of passionate interest groups who place the town ahead of political agendas. This could well result in a more cross interest outcome which will deliver a non-political body of local democracy in line with what the Downley parish councillor reader suggested.
Over the last few weeks, we have received tremendous support from community groups, church groups and local interest groups who have pledged support to working to deliver a town council .
We would certainly hope this is the case and that the people of High Wycombe will eventually have the truly local non-political democratic representation which a town council could deliver them!
