High Wycombers need their own society

EARLIER this year, Archaeology In Marlow (AIM) was invited to give a talk on Archaeology to the Wycombe Arts Festival.

The venue of the Hughenden Church Hall was a delight and a good audience filled the hall.

Although AIM was able to explain basic archaeological practices with the use of film and Powerpoint presentations, the research undertaken and the information presented on High Wycombe was not as comprehensive as we would have liked.

Limited knowledge of the Villa on The Rye, Keep Hill Camp, Desborough Castle and the Iron Age Hill Fort at West Wycombe had been assembled and it is hoped that the audience appreciated the presentation we made.

We tried our best, but AIM is not a High Wycombe organisation. Perhaps, therefore, High Wycombe needs an Archaeological Society.

After all Chesham, Maidenhead, Henley, Beaconsfield and Marlow have their Societies, so why not Wycombe?

Should there be an interest for such a society in Wycombe, AIM would be delighted to help in a variety of ways.

Apart from general advice, AIM has acquired a good range of archaeological equipment via a grant from the Local Heritage Initiative.

As part of the project we undertook, we agreed to lend out any of this equipment to other local archaeological groups without charge.

So, carpe deum High Wycombers – what have you to lose?
