Will they wait until another child is hurt?

I WAS interested by the comments about the great spread of potholes following the recent inclement weather.

The problem, of course, is not just on the ‘major’ roads used by buses etc, but is considerable also on the side roads. Ours is a Y-shaped cul-de-sac, so – even without the through traffic that clears the snow more rapidly – Orchard Park has both new and extended potholes.

Around 28 years ago, my younger daughter was brought down by holes in the, then, concrete surface whilst on her child’s cycle, and sustained a partially-fractured elbow.

The council paid her £10 compensation and, later, put a tarmac/gravel surface on the roads. This was only about half-an-inch (1cm) thick, and it has been breaking up extensively over the years. Now the potholes are much larger.

Obviously, the council will pay attention to the larger potholes on more important roads, but I will be surprised if anything is done about roads such as ours.

In many parts of Holmer Green, the pavements were already bad. There are many elderly people who find it necessary to walk on the road rather than risk the uneven pavements. The roads are now becoming as bad for them.

I guess some of the next generation of children will have to suffer accidents before our road is resurfaced.

Derek A Knight, Orchard Park, Holmer Green.
