VAL Letheren, the Conservative cabinet member for transport, with the county council is supporting Freedom Under the Law, as strongly endorsed by Margaret Thatcher as prime minister, in wanting enforcement of speed limits.

This is not an attack on liberty as Robert Street (Letters, July 1) suggests.

Restraints on speed are needed to protect the right of vulnerable people to use the roads.

This is a very proper role for the state.

It protects the general public good.
